I need to replace the large bushings (four of them) that attaches the main boom of my 4500 Ford backhoe 755 to the swing post assembly by a large pin. Also I need a hydraulic boom cylinder rebuild "kit".
The Reno Ford dealer says $60 for the kit and $90 each for the bushings! Like $420 + tax for these items! What about having a machine shop make me the bushings? What material would one use? Seems a bit high for the bushings! What about baumbearing.com? thanks for any feedback jeff

Case uses bearing hard steel bushing with softer pins, thats probably why they are so high, there's so much pressure at that point brass wouldn't last long even properly lubed. Just imagaine the amount of pressure on those two pins that there would be with the arm extended straight out with 1000Lbs of dirt in the bucket ,just bite the big one and you won't be sorry. My 2cents

Hi Jeff glad you asked this question. I don't have an answer for you but I have another question
Does anyone have a surefire method of removing the welded in bushings on things such as loaders and backhoes short of bringing it to a machine shop and having them bored out.

run weld bead inside diameter of bushing (bearing). it shrinks and you can take out easy.

Hi Jeff, I am building a Backhoe right now. I am using SAE 660 Bronze for the bushings you are talking about. You can get the bushings from Mcmaster Carr Supply (mcmaster.com) or a local bearing supply house. Check with baileynet.com for the cylinder repair kit. they may be able to help you out.

SAE 660 bronze should work well in this application and is a free machining alloy.

Hi Jeff, Buy the cylinder kit from the dealer, less headaches. I made my own bushings. Decide if you want to replace pins or bushings. I choose the bushings so I made them from softer material, used steel but soften them beforing installing.

How do you soften the steel?

Hi Nathan, Heat the metal and let it cool slowly. Heat to around 1500 degrees, a very dull orange color in shade or what they call straw. The pins naturally work harden. It doesn't take much difference in hardness to make one part wear faster than the other.
