Pumping out my pond What were they using?

I had a guy come over and pump out my pond so that we can clean it out. He used a gasoline powered fire fighting pump and some sort of suction device. It looked like a large aluminum "Y" where one end was hooked to a 4" suction hose and the discharge side also was 4" but in the middle there was a 2" connection for the discharge from the pump. What would happen is that he started pumping with the pump then primed the 4" hose. The discharge from the pump actually created a suction in the 4"hose and he was able to draw water out of the pond with the 4" hose by using the discharge from the pump. This was the slickest thing I have seen in years. What do they call those "Y" things?

Yep, an eductor.

Schutte & Kottering (sp?) make them for the Navy.

If it was a new "fire service" one, it would've been their "TurboDraft" line:

We called them Eductors when I was in the Navy too. Do ya think he was using a PT250 pump? :-)

As others have said it will move anything that can fit through that 4" line. I'd wager they had a screen or something on the inlet side of that 4"er. The Navy uses them for emptying flooded compartments on ships. Since a lot of times those compartments are below the water line, you get the lifting action needed that a pump alone cannot provide. We had a lot of "fun" training with them and other damage control stuff in Norfolk.

In the fire service we call them a high-lift adapter. Works the same way as the jet in a jet type well pump.
It allows the pump to move water up the suction hose from greater elevations above the water surface. Doesn't move more water that way, just allows the pump to lift it farther. Without it a centrifical pump can only lift about 25ft or so verticle from water surface to pump inlet.

That is a Venturi. Same thing used in a gold dredge. It will move more water than the pump will,due to the suction created. Also, it avoids having to pull the muck from the bottom of the pond through the pump.....

Using the veturi will move less water per hour than a low pressure high volume pump taking the same HP as the high pressure low volume pump being used now..... ..... .. but. As you stated the huge advantage is that the pump does not have to handle large solids. A pump pushes far better than it can drop pressure at it's intake to let atmospheric pressure push the water in (pull) . Hence positioning the syphon down at the pond level. This also avoids dragging the gasoline powered pump out onto a floating barge on the pond to acomplish the same thing.

Oops, Buick, I was wrong on the volume I guess ... When we were hunting gold, it seemed like more water...But going over a dam, would siphon effect take over ??? Regards, Davis

Ah yes, siphoning; in the '70s had a neighbor who was farm-raising catfish. Had a 120 yd long-6 ft wall seine. We would borrow the seine and over 3 or 4 years seined most every pond in the community..... for fun; fish to eat; just to "see what's in there", etc. (Had a lot more energy then than I do now) In addition to fish, caught many a snake, turtle, fresh-water mussel etc. Several of the ponds were too deep to seine; had a roll of 2 inch black plastic pipe which we used to siphon the water down to a usable level. Took 2 or 3 people to fill the pipe with water and get the water to flowing; be surprised how much you could lower the water level in a few days..... .

Once primed and the head height is kept higher than the discharge. The fluid should still flow.

Hi Davis,

Yep they still irrigate cotton here using a siphon pipe. It appears to be 1-1/2" diameter x 72" long plastic pipe with a "P" trap. The supply ditch is concrete lined "V" with a flat bottom, about 6".

The irrigator places his palm over the right end of the pipe and quickly moves the pipe back and forth in the supply ditch while opening his palm on the prime stroke, moving left, then covers the end with his palm on the suction stroke, moving right.

He does this about 10 times until he feels water at the end of the pipe on his palm, then drops the pipe on the ground with the discharge pointed at the crops and the suction inside the supply ditch.

He sets about 1/2 mile of siphon pipe, about 1hr, then goes back and sets the pipe for each row water needs.

Truely amazing to watch these guys start a field but there arms must hurt at the end of the day.

Pump discharge hose goes on one leg of a "Y" . another hose goes to pond or sump..... 3rd hose is outlet. A vacuum is created at the venturi, that sucks water from pond or whatever. Avoid having to use a trash pump, since mud rocks, etc do not ever go through the pump.
