Can Somebody explain what the difference between Hydrolic and Hydrostatic drive.

I want to build a self propelled buggy(a tric) with a bidirectional hydrolic drive motor on each of the two drive wheels and the third wheel being a pivit.
Do each of the drive motors require their own hydrolc or hydrostatic pumps? I also want to run another drive motor for the head (impliment)to spin (one direction)and a hydrolic ram for depth control (up and down). Do each of these also need their own pump?

Any help would be appreciated.

To answer your question. A hydrostatic drive consists of a directly connected pump and motor, one or both must be variable volume. The speed of the motor is controlled by the changing of the volume per revolution. This is a very positive drive and the only type that will be good for your application.
A hydraulic drive usually refers to a pump connected through some type of valve, then to one or more motors. The control of the oil by the valve is hard to keep constant when the load varies, (except at full speed), and also creates more heat in the oil than the hydrostat.
The use you describe would require a HYDROSTAT to work satisfactorily for the wheel drive. You would need a separate pump or on some hydrostats you can tap into the charge pump section for a low GPM. If you use the same pump to run the extra motor and the cylinder, the motor will stop when you use the cylinder valve.

This is done all the time. For the drive you need one motor for each wheel and a vairable piston pump. For the working side you need one pump to run everything.
I have all the parts you need for this if you want to come get them. Pumps, drive motors, control valves, hyd. tank. Its all there. They came out of a Tennant 550 floor scrubber. A friend tried to make a tractor out of them. He had it all running, He just got bored with the project and talked me into hauling it home. The drive pump and load pump are coupled together so it runs off one engine. Its all free to a good home or not so good home.

Good Luck. Many equipment manufacturers struggled for years to come up with a hydraulic drive system that would work. It's a complex design to balance the load on each wheel.
