Gas Chain Saw Won't Run

I have an older Sears gas chain saw. Have replaced the fuel line and made sure the filter was clean. Wouldn't pull fuel from the tank before or after I rebuilt the carb. If I use a manual vacum pump (Mighty Vac) on the end of the fuel line I can pull fuel from the tank. If I spray carb cleaner in the carb it will run until the fluid is used, but it will not pull fuel from the tank. Pulled the muffler, the piston dosen't appear to be scored, showed signs on gas oil or oil on piston. Have not run a compression check yet, but I would think it is okay. Any ideas of what to do next to get this monster running? Used to be my dad's, would like to save it if possible.

Thanks..
Bill

I once had a Homelite chainsaw years ago. I had the same problem. The guys are right about the diafram. But that wasn't my problem. My problem was a leaky crankshaft seal, which runs the diafram. Just another thought .

Replaced the diaphram with the one in the re-build kit. Will check again.

Sounds like the diaphram in the carb has a peephole in it or is just dry rotted . The diaphram acts as a fuel pump .

I worked on a Poulan for a coworker and it would do just like yours does . I replaced the fuel line and no luck . Would run if I poured gas in the carb for about 30 sec. .

Take a look at the diaphram . It is the rubber piece on the side of the carb under a little piece of sheetmetal .

Hope this helps !

Chris

The diaphram is the problem. They get stiff and will not pump. Sometimes if you can keep getting the saw to run by shooting gas into the carb as you are doing it will finally start pumping and run on its own. Remember, this is a two cycle engine and the gas you are dousing into the carb needs some oil in it

be sure the gaskets at the intake flange where the carb bolts up has the pulse holes open to make the diphragm pump!
