HI I was give an no name brand 3/4 drive rachet and socket set. To me the drive itself seems to be fairly beefy and substantial. Only problem is it is missing the "back" plate and probably a ball bearing selector? Since its noname i wasnt even going to try to fix and since I already have a complete set of 3/4 craftsmans drives, I was thinking of just welding it shut in the "off" position. This way I can have a "sacrificial" bar. ANy thoughts b4 I do this? Any other ideas. thanks dave

Hi Dave,

This is really a crap shoot on this one as who knows what the steel is like. I think I would heat the opposite end to a dull red then let cool then run a bead around that end. Let cool then check for cracks.

If no cracks after couple hours, reheat too a dull yellow (straw) and quench in oil (adds hardness), then reheat to 500 (lead melts at 500) then quench in oil adding temper.

If this turns out well then do the other end that your really wanting fixed.

There's no loss if welding it doesn't work. Just don't trust it too much if you really lean on it.

On the other hand, they make pretty good hitch pins...
