Hi Al, If it was mine I would repair the bad weld. You didn't say where the bad weld was located on the manifold but I think I would use temp bolts to a steel table to keep the manifold from warping while welding, letting the manifold expand side ways in the mounting holes but keep it from warping on the flange mating surface and keep it bolted until the manifold is ambient cool without the aid of any external cooling, rap in a heat blanket, sand, dirt, etc.

You can use any ni-cad welding rod for arc welding or use the rod as a filler rod braze welding. Depending on what filler material was used on the original braze welding would determine if all of the orginal filler material needs to be removed or not. Do clean the weld area 1" on either side of the weld area before welding.

thanks t bone, but what about pre heating?does anyone know if this is cast iron?do i have to worry about stress cracks? the repair is on the"elbow"part just below the flange for the exaust pipe.
thanks again

Hi Al, Yep your right I missed the preheat to 200 to 300 degrees. It should be a good quality cast iron. If the weld does start to stress crack and I'm sure the metal is clean then I will peen the weld lightly but thats not normally something I have to do.
