I am currently an apprentice pipefitter in Chicago. I was wondering if there are any current or former pipeliners out there who could help me in locating a working Lincoln gas welder. I worked as a helper for a while and many seemed to have the SA-200. I was going to purchase one from a welder but there was a problem with the carburetor so he decided not to sell it to me. I am looking for a dependable machine, as I would like to rig up in the next couple of years. I was curious if any experienced welders may be able to point me in the right direction. Thank you for your help.

Hi Mike,

I would be sure to pick out a copper wound machine as they have the most stabil arc of all of them. I believe some of the newer SA200 may be aluminum. You might want to check that out.

I next would consider only diesel powered. If you sit down and do the math I think a diesel will pay back in fuel saving in less than 18mths. That would lower your orperating cost considerably and stick more money in your pocket.

If the diesel generator is a 4 pole then it would make maximum power at 1800rpm. Once again saving ware and tare on the machine both engine and genset.

I would think the gassers would be a 3600rpm genset thus would ware at twice the rate of a diesel model.

1hr of shop time would cost less than a $100 to have any genset checked over by a good mechanic. Maybe talk one of your buddies into running a few beads.

Mike, I got one about a year ago. I was lucky and got one from my local papers for $500.00. It was kind of sorry looking but runs great. I've seen them from $500 up to $2500.00 depending on the shape their in. Mine is a crank start. Not practical for everyday use but fine for me. I think the unit is great. Makes me weld like I'm a pro when I have little experience. Compared to my little buzz box it's a way better welder. She starts on the second crank every time or I'm doing something wrong. I painted it up and now have to paint the trailer.

Lincoln makes a darned good machine and I'm not going try to change your mind about brands , but theres a lot of good machines out there that will work as well without the SA200 price..I've got a Hobart with the Willys Jeep engine in it on my service truck. I do air arcing, welding , water line thawing .It has given me zero problems for the last 5 years. [ with normal oil changes and tune-ups] I'm not here as a sales rep. , just a happy user.If you are going to be a die hard lincoln user, consider a Ranger 10. Smaller more compact, easier on gas, more portable. Good Luck
