Should weldrod be stored vertical or horizontal? I was going to make a cabinet, metal, to hang on the wall over my woodstove. I could mount it right on the block chimney and get the heat from the stove to help keep it dry. I'd put a light bulb inside when the stove is not in operation. Any downside to this plan?

my rods are moisture resistant !!! in reply to Jim-IL, 12-03-2004 14:51:53
no need to store in a hot box and by the way, a refrigerator doesn't meet the requirements of a hot box by the AWS even though alot of people use them. A 7018 is out of spec's per the code after 3 hours in a refrigerator !

Hi Jim,

Welding electrodes should be stored horizontal. If there stored vertical then viberations will break off the flux on the rod tips.

Been storing them horizontally for close to fifty
years without any problems. Just keep them up off
the floor. Never had a problem in unheated garage.
I do keep the special rods (high priced) nickle and such in the house.

Most welding stores have them laying down. As far as keeping them dry, to much heat will make the flux come off and then all you have is wire rods. Best way to store them is in an old frig. Cool/dry
