I'm trying to find out what would be the feed rate and the RPM for a 3/8 and 1/2 dia. HSS 4 flute end mill in aluminum, for roughing and for finishing. Trying to write a manual program for a Haas CNC mill. Can't figure it out.

It's been awhile, but I agree to use a 2 flute. The speeds come a long way from the real old lathes. We'd cut hard steel with ceramic on a tight lathe. It was always fun to see the guys on the machining centers making chips while we were making dust on the onesy and twosy parts. lol We'd always get some secondary ops and modifications too. Bill

Norbo, It would also depend on your depth of cut as to what you might want as a feed rate. The endmill to use would be one made for aluminum which has a different helix and clearance ground on it for chips because of the excessive feed rates running in aluminum. We have found in our machine shop that a 2 flute endmill for aluminum (we prefer carbide but also use some HSS)will run super with a .250 D.O.C. and 5000RPM and 25 I.P.M. feed through 6061 T6 aluminum, that is for a .500 dia. endmill and for a .375 endmill we use 20 I.P.M. feed. We use a Haas Minimill and love it. Have some fun, Bill.

I've always used the following rule of thumb for speed:
4 x Cutting speed (in feet / min)/diameter

Material cutting speeds can be found in the Machinery's Handbook. CS for aluminum with HSS is 600 fpm, and the tool diameter in your case is 1/2".

That calculates to 4(600)/.5 = 4800 rpm. I start with a slow feed (10 or 15 inches/min.) and work up until I get a good finish and chip.

I would start out at 2000 RPM & 10 inches per minute,(using Coolant) & use overrides to reduce them starting up. I have a Hurco CNC, & I never use charts of formulas to get feeds or speeds. Just a seat of the pants type of guess based on prior experience. Unless I have many parts to run, I try not to push machine, most of my jobs take more time to set up & program than actal machining time. As far as end mills... I almost always use carbide cutters, life is at least 10X, and accuracy is much better, due to rigidity of carbide. By the way, in aluminum, I prefer a 2-flute cutter, it gives more clearance for gummy chips to escape. Regards, Davis

I used to use rule of thumb for manual milling drilling. 1/2' = 500RPM. 4 flute would go 1000 and 1/4 would be 1000, so 3/8 would be 1500. I'd add 1/3 for aluminum so I'm thinking about 2000. Feed you are on your own as this was manual. Don't plug this in and hit the button, just see how close. Do you have a Machinery Handbook ( the Bible)? or some tool literature? This was a rule of thumb I heard somewhere and it was always close fore me, however I was in a toolroom and never a job shop or production. You'd double for carbide too. Bill

Without looking in a book for the answer...increase rpm"s till the chip gets hot...increase feed rate till finish tells you to back it back down. Fred OH
