Just got a blasting cabinet.... now what????

I picked up a used blasting cabinet today it has a gun and a foot pedal but there is something missing prior to the foot pedal. I think there is suposed to be a pressure regulator or air dryer but I am not to sure since I have never seen one up close before. Also what type of media do I need? I will be cleaning my small tractor parts such as carbs and small cast iron parts. The dust collector has a air hose connector so I am guessing that it runs on some sort of venturi type of process since it does not have a power cord or electric motor.

Use Aluminum oxide grit. Black beauty and silica sand won't hold up long for recycling. Unless you have air to spare, loose the cyclone vacuum and get an electric one. Probably no regulator, these things usually run at system pressure ~120 lbs. If anything, you're probably just missing a flow restrictor valve (any old gate valve will do).

Spend some time at

www.tptools.com

they are experts at blasting cabinets and such and you should learn from just looking at what they have to offer.

You should have a filter/water seperator on the unit and depending on the line pressure you might need to regulate it down. Most good blast cabinets have a vacum system and it is usually a seperate item, sounds like that might be missing.

Sorry that this wont help with your question, but I saw you mention cleaning carbs in your blasting cabinet, and I thought I'd reccommend that you not do this. The small particles will be next to impossible to clean out of the internal passages of a carb, and you don't want them going through your engine. A much better plan would be to buy a 5 gallon pail of carb cleaner from your local auto parts store and soak the carbs. It'll take the paint off and leave things clean and then rinse off with water. Another no-no with blasting cabinets, while I'm here, is blasting aluminum pistons. The blasting material will imbed itself into the ring lands of the pistons and wear the rings prematurely. Blasting cabinets are great for alot of things, but keep certain critical engine parts away from them if possible.

Carb. dip type cleaners will not clean the rust out of a carb. Most of these tractor carbs. have had water in them and are rusty and blasting is the best way I have found to clean them.As with any method a careful check of the ports to make sure there open is a must.

I can't respond to your other questions, but for the blast media, I recommend Black Beauty slag. It is fairly agressive and seems to hold up real well. Cost is something like $9 per 100 pound bag. (Stay away from silica sand.)

I just go down to the river and find a nice sand bar and scoop up a few buckets and then screen it and use it in my sand blaster. WHAT DID THEY USE BEFORE SOMEONE DECIDED TO MAKE MONEY ON BAGGING SILICA????? ?? Works like bottled water.. WHAT DID WE DRINK BEFORE BOTTLED WATER????? Keep saying to yourself---SANDblaster, SANDblaster, SANDblaster...deadeye
