Substitute for Little Giant ladder?

I have a stairwell that I need to paint and I can"t use a conventional ladder setup. I have been looking at the TV ads for the little giant and it seems to be just the ticket due to the ability to offset lengths front to back and solve the stagger problem on stairs. Only problem is that this thing is close to $400.00 and I think I could get a professional painter in for less.

Any suggestions on cheaper alternative that may do the job as well? I realize that I should look at the investment as a long-term thing but the price on this seems pretty steep.

Thanks in advance

I first saw the little giant ladder at the home show here in Grand Rapids, MI.

I got suckered into the demonstration and we had about 5 people on the ladder. There is no way a ladder should be that stable. I do a LOT of stuff around the house that you need a ladder to do and this is the MOST safe I have ever felt on a ladder. I have two of the step stands and have an extra wide arm that really comes in handy.

Call National Ladder Co in Grand Rapids, MI and tell them Jeff from Tony Betten sent you and they will take care of you. It will be the best money you have ever spent.

PS....get the heavy duty rated ladder...only a few extra bucks but well worth it. I have two of them now!!

This past spring a contractor friend asked me to help hang drywall in a stairwell. He had measured and cut 2" x 4"s to make legs of appropriate lengths, then nailed braces to make the platform sturdy. It was strong enough for both of us to work on. At least when it's done you can use the lumber for something else.

Two stepladders and a plank. in reply to Bob - MI, 11-29-2004 05:40:23
Cheaper, more stable, and more versatile. The trick is to lean one stepladder against the "high" wall of the stairwell and stand the other in the landing. The plank, naturally, goes between. For a longer spann, you need a scaffold-style plank which is more rigid.

The Gorilla ladder is a knock-off of the Wing Little Giant. They cost about a third the price of a comparable Wing. They are made in China.

I bought a Wing six years ago and I've used the heck out of it. It was close to 400 bucks with the work stand, and it's been worth every penny. I nearly killed myself on a cheap ladder once, and I only buy the best now.

Bob wrote, "Only problem is that this thing is close to $400.00 and I think I could get a professional painter in for less." The problem with this way of thinking is that six years from now when you want to repaint the wall, you will have to "buy" another painter, whereas if you bought the ladder now, you would still have it. (Of course this assumes you don't lend the ladder to your good-for-nothing brother-in-law and he breaks it!)

My wife is kind of scared of heights but wanted to do some painting on the trim of the house. Decerative painting I'm not capable of according to her. Anyway she thought if she had a sturdy lader she could do it so I ordered her the $400 little giant ladder. Guess what its does what they say. This is the safest lader I ever saw. I used it in putting the roof of my shop extention. Two neighbors who helped me ending up ordering the ladder. One accident will pay for the little giant ladder. My wife already broke her back twice (not from ladders. Since she insist on using a ladder, even with her fear of heights, I would have paid 10 times the price. Can we put a price on safty?

Go to a Lowes or almost any ACE hardware store.
Werner makes an MT series that is very similer to the Little Giant. Werner makes the MT-13 13". MT-17 17" MT-22 22" & MT-27 27".
You can go to wernerco.com and look at them.

Werner 17ft. is $99.00 at Costco. Sam's Club probably has something like it at same price.
