I'm in the market for a auto welding helmet. I'm looking at a Hornell Speedglas 9000v. If anyone has any suggestions about the reliability of this helmet, or any other suggestions, as to brand, I would appreciate your comments and suggestions.

Thanks,
Robert

The SpeedGlas line of helmets are the most durable helmets available. Lots of options, wide field of view, adjustibility, etc.

Having said that, I have a Miller (=Hobart more or less) Dale Ernhardt Jr. Helmet. I have had my welding distributor return and get a new lens assembly twice. It kept acting up, erratic darkening, imcomplete darkening, no darkening, etc. I am pretty disgusted with it overall. I"ll likely get a Speed Glas next.

I also found out that unless you keep your shop heated they will not work very well much below 40-50 degrees. So I returned mine, inquired on other brands and toldsame thing. I went and stayed with my regular fresh air unit instead.

One thing to look for in one of these helmets (or anything else with batteries) is a replaceable battery. The solar cell-powered Hobart I have has a built-in Lithium battery which went south. I had to open up the cartridge and wire in an AA battery holder.

I got a Hobart from Northern Tool this summer that I like. It replaced an older one that had a rather narrow lens. The new one has a much bigger lens, something I think you should look for when shopping for yours. I have seen the same helmet at TSC for $10 or $20 less than Northern Tool.

I have a Speedglas 9000 and think its great. The venting system is top notch. You can actually breath and sweat inside it without fogging the lens. I did have the lens replaced under warr. as it had developed rainbow colored seperation. No problems after that. The only thing I would improve is the access to the controls. I have seen some helmets with the controls on the side of the helmet instead of inside. Good and bad to that as the controls are more accesable but also easier to accidently change the setting that way as well.
