Ok so it doesn't have anything to do with tools or old tractors. There was a little incident inside the door of my barn and a skunk unloaded everything he had during his last gasps. Hard to get within 50 feet of my barn now. Anybody have any idea how long it will take for the stench to go away? What do skunks eat? Did he have anything to do with the disapperence of my baby kittens a month or so ago?

Sulfur- Burn a couple of cans of sulfur, make sure you don"t have animals in there. You can get this from the hardware store. I bet you will not have not have odor ever again. And it will smell fresh and clean in 24 hours.

Dont shoot them.
Use a live trap in a 55 gal drum and bait him in there and have a pipe in there, when he is in there walk behind it,cover it and attach pipe to your mower and gas him.
No SPRAY and no more problem.
He WILL not spray in the trap if they cant see you,you can stand next to it and talk and he wont spray.
Use sardines they work vey well.

Well, most of the information posted below agrees with my experience except - We used to have a problem with skunks getting into the nests in the henhouse. You'd get quite a rush when you went in after dark to gather the eggs, reach into a nest and find something with coarse hair! We had it down to a science: Any two members of the family could pull it off. the one who "discovered" the skunk would grab the spotlight. The other member would take the trusty old .22. Discoverer would go out, open the nest and shine the spot light into the particular nest box. Shooter would whistle, and when skunk looked up, BANG - right between the shiny, beady little eyes. Skunk would collapse on the spot, usually before he got a chance to do his thing. Usually could take it out on a shovel, and bury it and possibly the litter from bottom of nest, and problem was solved.

F.W.,

Finally a post I can answer as an "expert"!

I have been on a campaign to wipe out skunks in our lifetime.

After having my machine shed, barn, dog, me, kid, cats, tractor, truck, etc. stunk up by the miserable things, not to mention huge holes dug in my dam and under several buildings, I have come up with the following:

1. The stink will go away eventually, but like Carol said below, everytime it rains, or is a calm foggy night, you will be reminded of the incident.

2. The formula that DRL posted does work pretty well, at least on the dog, your shoes, and my beard (did lighten the red up a little, though). Not sure about spraying down the barn with it.

3. Tomato juice is only good for mixing with beer (try it, you'll like it) when celebrating another sucessful skunk kill.

4. When blasting a skunk, they almost always "let fly" as a final act of defiance. Even 1 little drop is enough to stink up an entire barn!

5. If you have a hole that they have a nest in, and manage to kill the one living in it, every generation back to The Ark will move in one at a time, each time you kill one off. Even if you fill the hole with bricks, broken bottles, wire, Etc., another will dig it all out and move in 'till you wipe out the entire family tree. (Noah should have raised the gangplank when he saw these suckers coming!)

6. Leaving the light on doesn't always work. In fact, I think it sometimes acts as a "vacancy" sign.

7. A healthy skunk, as a rule, doesn't stink, and you usually won't know it's there unless you see it. If you smell one, it's either just tangled with something, or is sick. If you see one staggering around in the daylight, suspect rabies, and dispatch it at once!

8. Aim carefully. When pumping water down the hole in your dam, be sure not to shoot a hole in the end of your garden hose when the THIRD skunk climbs out.

9. Skunks will get your kitties, but a rogue Tom cat is a better bet.

I have more wisdom, but the dog is barking. Better get outside and see if I can get number 28 this year :)

After three days stench has died down enough where I can at least go in there. Going to have to work on siteing my .22 in a little better so it won't take three shots to hit one next time. A hunter I am not. Funny you should mention about the groundhogs. Stuck a hose down their hole a while back and hooked it to the tailpipe on my pickup as I was tired of their throwing dirt everywhere. If it ain't one thing its another.

There was an episode of Mythbusters that tested out what gets rid of skunk stink. Might be helpful. Entertaining anyway.

Skunks are nocturnal animals,They are most active at night.Install a small light in your barn and leave it on at night. It won't alleviate the present smell but will help prevent it from happening again.

Had trouble with skunks under a patio. Fill up the hole, they were right back.

Finally someone said throw some mothballs in the hole. I did and they never came back.

I will bet money that you will have that smell every time it rains for the next 10 years.. had the same thing happen up in maine years ago the skunk let go in the woodshed attached to the house.. The smell was still there when we took the shed down 15 years later.. and every rain you could smell the aroma..

I have heard skunks are scavengers. I was warned that when I killed the ground hogs digging in my barn-outbuildings skunks would move in. That's been true. Skunks work at night.

I have heard that tomato sause or juice will remove the smell form animals, maybe barns too. I have no experience with it though. It is supposed to be the acid in the tomatoes that does it.

Got some "Skunk Away" from my vet to put on my cat once. Worked excellent. Its too expensive to spray down your whole barn but if you had a couple of individual items you could treat them. I think it was $7 for about a pint. I even used it once down the heater of a truck to get the mouse urine smell out too.

Not an expert and hope I never have to be! There was a thread on this board a long time ago and someone posted a mixture to rid pets of the odor. I have copied and pasted this brew below. Maybe could treat the sprayed floor, walls, etc. with the stuff and at least tune the smell down a little. Good luck.

DESKUNKING RECIPE
(Courtesy the Kansas State Vet. Med. Teaching Hosp.)

Bathe pet with a mixture of:
1 quart 3 percent hydrogen peroxide
1/4 cup baking soda (sodium bicarbonate)
1 teaspoon liquid soap.

Nasty stuff that shunk spray. Bet I'll take a month to dissapate. Had this happen in garage. Had to place a very large shop fan blowing the air from inside out with door wide open for a week to get it lessen, even then it took several months to go away. Yep, think thats what got your kittens.

Whenever one of our dogs get sprayed by a skunk they immediately head for some lush green grass and will roll and rub in the grass. It seems to work real well in odor removal.Dont know if liquid chlorafil can be purchased to spray but it seems that the grass provides enough of it to clear up the dog problems.
