Problem with old Co-Op welder

It worked fine a while back last time I used it. Now it hums but won't arc, any ideas ?

The switch is goofy, but I don't think this is the problem because it hums.

Hi Red,

Maybe 1/2 of breaker triped? Bad twist lock on a welding lead connection? Loose or corroded rod holder or ground clamp?

Short the rod holder to the ground clamp and see if it sparks? No spark, then enternal problems.

I checked the cables as best I could... they're the "fixed" type. Used my DVM and I didn't get any reading.

It's on an old fuse-type panel box. It didn't occur to me that a fuse on one side could be out and that it would still humm.

I'll check the fuses and then open it up and see what I can find.

Assuming all connections are good, is there anything specific internally that is more prone to failure ?

I have an old Craftsman that did somthing like that. It turned out to be the connections to the switch were corroded so it was trying to operate on one leg only. Cleaned it up and it has worked since. If it is in an unheated shop it is more prone to this.

That could be it... I hope it's that simple.

It's in an old unheated quanset... it could be 40+ years old.
