Just installed a new 8 ft. two tube florescent fixture in my shop. It makes an anoying hum. Switched bulbs did not help. What causes that? Do I learn to live with it or take it back to Lowes?

Lowe's sells the Lithonia two-tube 8 foot commercial heavy-duty strip light for $49.00 This has an HO ballast which will tolerate cold weather operation. It emits a 60 HZ hum, but isn't too bad. I use these in my shop.

Attempting to use the typical $39 two-tube 8 foot fixture in cold weather will result in poor lamp starting and really excessive hum.

If you want a quiet ballast, I've had good luck with the Lithonia F32 two-tube 48 inch fixtures. These take two 32 watt T8 bulbs with an electronic ballast. The 120 volt models they sell at the big box stores still have an audible 60 HZ hum, but less than the magnetic ballast used in the HO strip lights.

The MVOLT models of this same fixture (120 to 277 volts) using 10% THD electronic ballasts are completely silent. They can be had from an electrical wholesaler for a price competitve with the 20% THD ballast at big box stores if you have a buddy with a suitable commercial account. I used 20 of these to light up my 2000 sq foot basement. Dead silent and plenty of light -- I estimated about 20 to 30 foot-candles at the floor.

Don't know where you are at but if its cold, ballasts will hum for a good while untill warm, unless you installed HO or VHO fixtures which are designed for cold weather applications. NO offence but I doubt you would find these fixtures at Lowes and they are pretty pricey.

You MAY be able to quiet it a bit by mounting the ballasts with rubber grommets, so less of the "hum" from the ballast is transmitted to the sheet metal of the fixture.

The price of a fluorescent ballast varies according to its quietness. The cheapest of ballasts are the noisiest. You may have to pay real money for a quiet ballast (and it may run cooler and last longer).

I was wondering that too. The gold print ballasts are the best followed by silver. The rest are best left in the store. Very low or high line voltage may make them hum extra loud.

Sometimes the label includes a sound rating in dB The lower that number the better.

I built a sound system for a quickly built city council chambers once. The media tapping into it for feeds grumbled about hum and had it reworked several times thinking my circuits were faulty. Actually it was the good microphones picking up the fluorescent ballasts overhead.
