Bob's experience with monoxcide make me remember this. I bought 3 smoke detectors at the local depot. Installed them and was fat, dumb and happy til one day I burned a pot on the stove. Came in from outside and smoke was so think I could not see walls. None of the detectors worked. Took them to local fire dept. and when we pushed the test button, they beeped...hold them over burning match or sheet of paper and nothing. Absolutly worthless. I took them back and exchange them, but the point is HOW MANY DEFECTIVE ONES ARE OUT THERE?. Point of all of this is please check yours with like a kitchen match or such. Don't trust the "test" button.

Some detectors require calibration but that's usually only done with commercial units connected to alarm systems. The home units may have been miss calibrated at the factory? Were those detectors the ion type with the radioactive warning sticker or the photo electric type? I've seen working photo electric go off only when the room is very smokey. Results vary with white or dark smaoke. The ionizing units intended to alarm on slow smouldering fires, will go off sometimes just by making toast. A can of smoke detector test "smoke" is a cheap investment to ensure protection of life and property.

Worked a short time for a company when got out of the Army that put in fire alarms. When install smoke detectors, rooms seperated by walls that come down more than 6" (doorways, openings for walk through, etc) need to have their own detectors. May not look the best with a million detectors on the ceiling, but that's the way it was. Figure that although technologies have changed, smoke still hugs the ceiling and can get "dammed" up into a room that doesn't have one before finally overflows into one that does, and then is too late to alert.

I had a couple which had a faulty solder joint on the sounder mechanism. Filed a complaint with the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Never heard anything back from them after I filed the complaint. Around here the smoke detectors get tested regularly - every time the oven gets used!

You may also contact underwriters laboretories. They have to test and approve all smoke detectors sold in the US.
