Hey, y"all.

I"m looking at getting a good drill press for my shop at home. I"d like a full-height floor type, not a little benchtop drill press. Any recommendations? I lean toward buying an older, heavier one at auction.

Thanks,
Darren

I bought a Shop Fox G 9974 this winter. It is a great drill press for the money. Good enough that Grizzly sells it instead of having one made with their name on it! Good speed range and lots of power. Check it out. Way Way better than the ones I looked at from Harbor Freight and Northern Tool.

I have an old antique line shaft press(flat belt) that has an electric motor adapted to it.It will do a really good job.Can be geared down to a crawl.Have used it to drill 1 1/4" holes.I'll take $150 cash for it.Located near Indy.bob

i agree with the others, slower is better. to drill big holes you need 100 RPM or less. to drill small holes in wood just about anything will work. don't be afraid of old stuff. as long as the spindle bearings are tight it will run fine.

Look for slow speeds.Less than 200 rpm is good, 150 or even 100 is better. Older, bigger, slower is usually how it goes. Some of the imports will go to 150 rpm if you pay more than your basic $200-250. They are good for the money. If you get one get one with standard V belts you can replace easily. Old,even "antique" drill preses are great. If you get a big, old, slow one and you can't speed it up enough for pilot holes, small holes, or wood working, well you can get a basic 5 speed bench model for way less than $100 for these light duty jobs and still have the big one for heavy duty.

I have a Delta floor unit 16 sp,3/4 hp. have drill lots of stuff with it and have no complaints. Its probably close to 15years old now. Also have a Jet floor unit 16 sp 3/4 horse, that I use on hole hawg bits no complaints. Only reason have this units was no bidders on sale that day. I would sell it probably if you are serious about buying.

Look for speed...the slower the better. If the slowest it can run is like 400 rpm, pass it up.

My first choice would be a Clausing, but they sell pretty high.

I'd look for one with a large chuck 3/4 or bigger, also larger HP 1/2 is ok but if you can find it 3/4 or 1 HP is even better. I have one with 5/8 chick and 1/2 HP and at times it doesn't have enough gutts to get the jub done as fast as I would like.
