Exhaust port erosion

I've got an AC WD45 that is blowing exhaust past the gaskets on one side of the manifold. I've taken the manifold off and found the exhaust port has eroded considerably so that even a new gasket won't seat properly.

I know the best fix is to take the head off and have it resurfaced but I want to get back in the field quicker than that and put off an overhaul another year or two.

I know JB Weld can't take the heat around the exhaust port but the only other stuff I've found is more muffler cement than anything else and is air cure to boot. I'm considering doubling up on the gasket material but I'm afraid that might be too thick to allow the other ports to seat properly. Any ideas out there?

I had an old 9N Ford that was that way once and I just cleaned it up around that port and used muffler or furnace cement (same thing) around it and it ran a good while that way. When it finally broke out, it was lunch time and I wiped the black away from it and smeared on some more. After lunch it was ready to go again. My advice is if you're gonna go this way is to not let it blow out for very long as it is eroding the block or head more. When I finally got around to repairing it, I electric wire brushed the block, belt sanded the manifold, installed the new gasket and it ran for years like that. L8R----Fred OH

Hi David, Don't count JB Weld out so fast. I had a warped head on a VW diesel that blew a headgasket in Ely, Nv. No such luck getting parts within a reasonable time. So I mixed the JB Weld on the soft side, lite on the hardner, coated both sides of the old head gasket, and it held for 50k miles before it blew again. I let it set up over night asslembled before I started it.

You could try building the area up with braze and then grinding and filing it even. Did it on my 9N and it lasted for quite awhile, at least over a couple of years, and I'm no grat wleder.

Good luck
Bill
