Hey Fellas,

I'm looking at a 70ish C65 Chevrolet 1 1/2 ton truck with a 16' metal grain box and hoist. It is in near perfect condition.

I have no idea what these things are worth. Can someone help me out on this one? (I live in grain country)

Thanks,

Allan

In my area pre 1980 trucks in your size range with combo racks seldom bring more than 3500, most have less than 75k on them. I have a 1972 with 27000 actual miles. Diesel pickups and good trailers have made them obsolete. most are hard on fuel

Allen any more you can buy an old road tractor for less than 5 grand, even though it may have a zillion miles on it ,would last for years on farm. And single axle tractors sell really cheap also. Beds are easy to find .Guy around here has a old tractor with 20 foot bed on it and pulls a 600 gravity wagon now thats a load.

Allan, We had 2 70ish chevys 1..72 C60...366 w/ 5+2, Tandem, hydrolic brakes, 22ft midwest bed w/ 18 in extension.
1..74 C65...366 w/ 5+2, Tandem, Air brakes, 22ft midwest bed, w/ 18in extensions.
Both trucks scaled out at about 17k lbs. I have personally crossed the scales carring 40K of wheat. Grossing 57K, More times than I can count. The 74 had the air brakes, But the 72 was a faster truck. It would top out at 90mph empty, the 74 topped at 87.
I would look at only big blocks enginge trucks. The 350 is a good engine for pickups and small mediums. Deffinatly not a large load truck, In My Humble, but Honest Oponion.
I would think that 5k should put you in the ballpark on price.
Later,
John A.
PS a neighbor had a 74 C65 427 w/ 13speed, twin screw, It was so fast that it left out 72 like it was sitting on blocks. Yes I did race my neighbors on the long straights back to our place. Was never beat in the 72 ot the 74.
Our Kenworth was second fastest around. These little imprompt too races broke up the harvest days.
Later,!!!!!

I had an 82 Gmc that I cut down and installed a good grain tight wood 15 ft box and hoist. 4&2 sp 350 engine and I got $5,5000 in 97. All it really needed was paint on cab no real rust. I've never seen any decent chevy's like that going for the $1,000 range. Around here they hold in the 4-7,000 range. Unless they're rusted right out. A clean single axle is almost worth more than a tandem unless its a real heavy twin screw tandem. I don't know what engine you have but that 350 in mine was all I needed for occasional use.

Yes Sir,

I think you are right. You start weighing one truck against another, new against old, and that $7K doesn't hold a candle to a $50K or $55K new one considering they both do the same work.

Sounds like you know your farming. :>)

Thanks,

Allan

Allan,

Maybe you have already done this but did you check out the Classic Trucks link on this page?

Seems like those ol boys might have more/better info fer ya. I saw one late 60s Chevy with a 292 6 in er and a workin hoist for sale CHEAP. Only problem is she is in CT and that would be a bone rattlin drive from CT to western NE.

Yer kidneys would pro'ly give out near Cleveland.

Well if you want er real bad maybe a bunch of us ol boys can all volunteer for a relay of sorts!

Have fun shoppin old trucks, they are just as fun as old tractors and you can get a speedin ticket too!

Hi Brian,

When I was a young man and had just got out of the Navy, my dad and I moved all the wife and my stuff down to Omaha using the old '59 IH BD farm truck with the stock racks on, so that I could go to school under the GI bill.

After we had finished that 30 hour, 1000-mile ordeal, we both decided that maybe this just wasn't the brightest way of doing things. :>)

I'm gonna look for one locally.

Allan

Heck, I was just joshin ya about the truck in CT but was serious about those fellas on that board maybe knowin what the c65 might be worth.

Just a thought.

I know that feelin "what was I thinkin" when you are 3/4 of the way through a long trip with a vehicle that is not meant for a long trip.

If nothing else, it teaches ya real quick.

Take care and have fun buddy!

Hi Allan,
Here in my part of ND Those trucks would sell for $1000-$2000. Condition is everything. It depends if it was bought new by a farmer and had little or no miles on salty roads with no more than 100,000 miles total, or is it a salty 300,000 mile OTR truck, converted to a farm truck? As the price of trucks increased,we saw fewer of these trucks bought new by farmers and more used up converted OTR trucks. Bigest problem on most 20-30 year old genuine farm trucks is that the brake fluid has never been changed and the MC boot has dry rotted off years ago so the brake cylinders are rusty junk. Other than that we have a lot of 30 year old 50,000 mile trucks in excellent condition.
Good luck, and hope you get a cream puff that will serve you long and well.

Hi My Friend,

My local guy and I were talking this morning. It depends on the purpose you want to use the darned truck for, I guess.

Heck, if I was a big farmer, a guy can buy a new Kodiac for $35K and hang a $20K box and hoist on it. But, that's a heck of a lot of money to spend for a little feller like me with only one tiny farm.

All I wanna do is haul a few cows, maybe some seed in the spring and a little bit of harvest chores. Just an old fashioned farm truck to handle some every day in and day out farm stuff.

I don't need a new one and an old one will last me a long, long time to my way of thinking.

We'll see how this plays out,

Allan

A big farmer wouldn't waste his $55K playing around with a little truck like that.

For that kind of cash, one could have a NEW 40' hopper trailer and a decent tractor in front of it.

Yeah, I hear that.

Seems like nothin' is done the way it used to be. Darned combine hopper holds more than these little trucks do anymore. :>)

In my area I have seen f-600 small dumptrucks and chevys too. Asking price, $1000 or so. 30 years old or so, grill is smashed, needs paint job, looks rough but will run. I live in Mich.

First off, I thought the C65 was/is a 2-1/2 ton truck(?)

Chevy's don't sell as well as Fords around here. (No real GOOD reason) But that being said, I bought a 1977 F 700 last fall. It has a 14' Knaphide grain bed, with twin cylinder 3 stage hoist. The bed is like new. 390 cu. in. GAS HOG, with 4x2 tranny/rear end. Good Michelin tires on rear. Firestones (w/ 75% tread) on front. Good truck all in all. I bought it at an auction. Paid $975. I'd take 2 more just like it for the same money!

You can get some mighty nice 25(+ or-) year old trucks for around $1000 or less. John

John,

You are right. The thing is a C-60. That makes it a 1 1/2 ton, right?

I'm thinkin' the C-50 is the ton and a half, the C-60 (Dad had a NICE '66 C-60) was a 2-1/2 ton. The C-65 was a HEAVY DUTY 2-1/2 tonner.

We had that 1966 C-60 from the time it was new, untill 1998. It was one heckofa truck. Just a little 327 gasser, but it would handle loads that a much bigger truck wouldn't. 16' Gallion dump bed, 4 x 2 tranny/rear end.

That was my "drivers ed" vehicle.....That and a 1972 Autocar road tractor...(Good training for my first car....a '74 Chevy Vega!) John

Hi John,

Hope you are right, but I've got a buddy who is a local 'field man' here who just stopped by this morning. I showed him a picture of the old truck and asked him for his opinion.

He said he saw one sell last week on a farm auction just like it, only with a wooden box, for $3500. Now, if I add another $1K for that steel box, I think I'm into some serious 'money exchange noise' here.

The guys around this country use these little things to nurse their wheat drills with.

Dunno, guess I'll have to play this tune by ear.

Thanks Bud,

Allan

I was at an auction lately that had a truck similar to the one you describe. It had a cheater axle with singles and a hoist. Was still in use but the owner upgraded to a semi. It sold for around $600- cheap hauling til it breaks.

Allan, In my neck of the woods they are cheap this time of the year. Most times less than what the grain bed and hoist cost. Grain trucks always seem to have lo miles and be slicker than snot. And like the other guys said, anywhere from a tad under a thousand, and never more than two thousand. Depends on how quick you need one seems to dictate the price.

Hi Allan. I just sold a 1978 C30 with 83,000. org. miles I too had a hard time finding a price for it. All the different online car and truck sites seemed to stop somewhere in the mid 1980s. After just doing the math on how much the same truck went up in value, I just reversed it. Funny thing, my truck was only worth $400. but got a $600. dollar credit for the mileage. The only thing that held the value up was a 12-foot flatbed with a 5-ton dump hoist. The bed and hoist was worth around 4-times more than the truck. Only in America!

Locally, they're almost worthless; the real farmers have gone to trailer-trucks (some 10-wheelers); the hobbyists don't need/use them. At auction, around "here", probably in the $1000 range..... ..

What motor and transmission is in it? Six cylinder or V-8? Transmission 4 speed with Two speed rear end is common. Power steering? I watched one sell two years ago that was like new 36000 miles one owner-2,000.00. Good deal for new owner
