Whenever their is a discussion about tool quality on here the subject of "made in China" tools -vs- the higher quality brand name tools is usally brought up. Depending on what type tool is in question the quality names like MAC, Proto, Snapon, Ingersoll Rand, etc are always thrown out. Well, I just bought a brand new IR 1/4 inch angle die grinder and guess what says right there on the tool in plain view...Made In China....It all goes to show you never really know where something is made. Even tools made here are liable to be made with China made steel, so in the end to some degree it's still being made in China. Just something to think on.

OK< time for my .02 worth. I bought a new Mac 1/2" impast a year ago, paid $189.00?? I think, did not think a lot about it, but it went in the box and gets a lot of use, been a good impact. about 3 months after I bought it, I was cleaning it and oiling it, and noticed on the the label:
"Made in China", man was I impressed, use a lot of Craftsman tools, do not have a lot of problems with them, have some Mac sockets, broke then doing the same things I do with Craftsman, and some chinese specials, now they are in the bottom of the box, do not use them, get tired of breaking them, then havint to go get another socket, wastes a lot of time in the long run. Do not know what to buy now, have been looking at S&K again, but I am not sure about them either. would like to find a good tool supplier that does not want my building as down payment on them.

My toolbox got stolen last week. I went to the local cheap chinese tool store and bought a set of six pliers for ten bucks. I was rewiring a receptacle in the basement. The cheap chinese wire cutters will cut 12 gauge copper. My Craftsman professionals did it a lot easier.

I went to sears yesterday to replace my tack hammer. They wanted $14.99 for a 10 oz claw hammer with a hickory handle. I left depressed and empty-handed.

I recently bought an 18 V cordless drill at the local Tractor Supply, made by some outfit called "Clarke Tools" and made in China. It was pretty cheap, compared to DeWalt, or Milwaukee, but, so far, it"s done a pretty good job. My biggest complaint, is that it seems to have a lot of gear noise---- which may become a problem, but it came with the same 1 year warranty the others offered, so we"ll see how it holds up...
I know "you get what you pay for" (hopefully), but, at $70, I can exchange it lots of times...
Be sides, I have a decent Craftsman drill as a back-up (LOL).....

Television's PBS network documented what's happening between China and Walmart. So much was said it would be hard to summarize here. Is it good old capitilism or is it predatory marketing.. or is there a difference? Kruschev used to say many years ago that Russia will bury us. I think China stands a better chance of it economically with their 25 to 50 cents an hour workers competing with ours- and our government shrugging its shoulders.

The China situation is a very real "economical" threat. In the last 6 months, the US dollar has dropped hard against other currencies. The idea is to make the US domestic goods cheaper, and try to cut the trade deficit.....but the Chinese dollar is fixed to the US dollar. So their crap is going to keep coming. But imports from other countries will slow down.

We are only getting what we as a society asked for. We want things for as low a price as we can get them. The companies are doing as we asked. The problem is, their cost is now 10% of what it used to be but the price to us only went down 10% if that. Where do you suppose all that extra profit is going? Don't say the workers because top management's wages have gone up 400 times as much as the average worker's. Also stockholders expect to become millionaires overnight, no one wants to work for a full career any more.

It is a good thing that the "W" got back in so he can fix all this stuff. Please be patient until it happens.

If it's any comfort to you, the steel used in those tools probably came from scrap we sold to them. For that matter, so is much of the cardboard and paper used in packaging.

The ironic thing about this is that I live less than 3 miles from what was once the premier IR air tool plant in the industry. It is still in operation and assembling genuine American made tools from genuine Chinese components. Can I buy genuine IR air tools locally? NO I have to order and wait! Do I own genuine IR air tools NO, I can't wait that long. If I need an air tool, when my wife is going to Walmart, I have her pick up a new genuine chinese built Campbell-Hausfield air tool! 1/3 rd the price, made from the same components, lasts just as long. No waiting and shipping charges, No having to order parts, it stops working it lands in the scrap hopper and a new spare gets pulled off the shelf. Drives my neighbor who is an assembler at the rand crazy.

New Craftsman tools are junk..... Recently I helped a neighbor put a head gasket in a Chevy S-10 He took 2 sockets back because they stripped out. Finally, I went to the house & got my 20 year old SK set, finished up the job with no problems. I am lucky , that I have more tools than I will ever use, most of them were bought in 30 years of going to flea markets. Fleas are still the best place to buy tools, because theolder ones are better, unless you have pockets deep enough to by Snap-On or Mac.....
