Another air compressor Question

Thanks guys for your help yesterday with my question about oil in the compressor tank. I took the pump apart today and I don't see any apparent cylinder, valve or piston damage, so I think I just have worn rings. I see that CH has ring kits that are available, but I'm not sure if you can just put on new rings. Do I need to measure the cylinder, get the right size rings(?) and hone the cylinder?

Check to see if the rings were installed right side up.

Check direction of rotation and make sure that the pulley fan directs air across the compressor.

Put the old rings in the cylinder and check the end gap. (should be about .010 ")

Check the crankcase vent and make sure it can breath through that vent.

You can't get oversize rings for these machines, so the best you can do it give it a nice crosshatch hone, and install the new rings. I'd be questioning why the rings quit after only two years though. Is this compressor run hard? How are the air filters?

Thanks for the info Roger P. Yea, I don't understand either why the pump wore out so fast. 2 years isn't very long. I didn't think I used it very hard. However, once the pump was apart, I could see that the "exhust" valves were coated with carbon. I figure the pump head/valves must have gotten hot enough to burn up some of the oil blown by the rings. I'll put the new rings in, along with a new/better air filter assembly, but I'm doubtful that this will fix it for very long. I'm beginng to suspect that I bought to small of a compressor for my needs and that it's just running so often that it get's too hot to last long. Is there any rule of thumb to use about how long/often a compressor should run?

Pete
