Where to get slide hammer

While winterizing my boat this year I took the outdrive off to grease the U-joints and found a bad gimbal bearing. This has to be pulled out using a slide hammer and I don"t have one. Any suggestions on where I can get an inexpensive one? The Homier road show is in town this weekend and I checked their website and I found no slide hammers. I figured for sure they would have one.

I have never needed one yet so I don"t want to spend a lot but I bet this is one of those tools that once you get it you find it to be real handy.

Thanks in advance

The design of the OTC slide hammer is virtually "Pinch-Proof" ... Some of the cheap ones can inflict a nasty wound if edge of your hand is in the way as the slide hits the stop. I got lucky, & got an OTC with a pallet of tools I bought at a sale. I have made many attachments for it to do so-called Impossible jobs. It has made & saved me lots of dollars over the years.

Murray's Auto Parts in SE Michigan offers the same tool loaner deal as AutoZone. I used one of their slide hammers and was tempted to buy it for about $100.

For a good, OTC or other name brand slide hammer expect to spend 200 bucks.

E-bay is another source if you're not in a hurry.

If you have an Autozone in your area they loan them out. You have to pay a deposit equal to the price of the tool when you pick it up, but you get a full refund when it is returned.

I agree. I used the one to pull bearings from a blind hole last summer on a MF135 steering box lower bearing. The local tool sales stores had not ever heard of one. The only cost is the price of the fuel to make two trips to an AutoZone store. I put the deposit on plastic and they credited the same amount upon return.

Bob,

Go to NAPA. They carry a nice sized one with an assortment of jaws.

I added a link that includes directions on how to make one, but don't know how you would make the jaws to grab the bearing.

Harbor Freight.com or CumminsTools.com have cheap but good sets for about $40.

Don't bother with anything less than an 8lb hammer for pulling bearings.

They can be quite easily made..... using a shaft from your scrap pile and a "weight" that will fit the shaft.....I used a spacer from a disk gang.....
