With the winter coming and the prospect of spending more time inside.... Does anyone have any input on a HDTV converter to use the new HDTV signal on your old television.

You're jumping the gun about 7 or 10 years. The converter you describe are to receive HDTV and convert the signal down to current tv resolution for when tv quits transmitting on channel 2-13 and uhf and not everyone has a new receiver. You wont have anything different than what you see now on regular broadcast, although, the quality of picture will be better, the resolution will be same as standard tv. If you have HDTV in your area, you need to just ante up and buy a big 'ol flat screen as big as you can get. After you see HDTV, you'll never go back. I can count the crickets on the football field during NFL games!

I have cable TV and got an HD converter free with the digital tier. However, when buying a converter or receiver box, I would check that it works with your current TV and also has HD output in case you later upgrade to an HD monitor. The most common HD connection is called component video.

If you haven't seen an actual HD program source on an actual HD monitor, you are in for a treat. It is FAR superior to regular TV!
