OT.. Wheel chair lift

Has any one made their own lift for wheelchair and occupant that can be used in an older full size van? I think the capacity would be about 300 lbs, max. Lifts on Ebay are $500 and up, but are a couple thousand miles away (Midwest and East coast) and require local pickup. A local dealer quoted me $3000 for a used lift. I may not need it more than 6-8 months. Any plans or ideas?

Watch out for headroom as well. My brother has MS and is transported in a mini-van with a lowered floor. One holiday season, he was without a van and we were going to rent a commercial van and use an incline ramp. Roof wasn't high enough to keep him from banging his head. Your wife is in my prayers.

Thanks for your prayers. My van has 48" clearance at the door. I guess I'll start with a wood ramp just to see if there is enough headroom.

Scottp, thanks for the generous offer of your shop. I'm kind of stuck at home for the time being as my wife needs transportation to treatment 5 days a week, which I have to provide. A young friend is donating a station wagon and his "superior upper body strength" to do the lifting in and out of the wheel chair. So I have to be here. And I'm usualy with her for several hours each day at meal times. It seems to be making a difference in the recovery process.

Slowpoke - Been there , done that. First of all , are you going to load from the rear, or side doors? Rear is easier because the chair doesn't have to be turned to face forward and your access through the side doors is not restricted by the lift.
Actually , for the time frame you're talking about , I would stay away from mechanical/hydraulic lifts as they are prone to break-downs or electrical problems, especially if you're looking at used. I would suggest aluminium atv ramps ($100 - $200) available at TSC or an ATV dealer. They're light, strong, easily stored and you'll find many other uses for them as well.
Just remember ,that once your wife is in the van, to make sure the chair is tied down. Also, be very aware of sudden stops,quick starts or fast,sharp turns ----- gives the person in the chair heart palpitations !!!

You aren't near ND are you? I have a fairly nice 1990 Chevy van with a Braun lift I and I can't get $2000 for the whole unit!

They are a wonderfull thing to have when needed. I had a handicapped son, (who has passed away), and the van sure was a godsend for us. I have loaned it out several times when a friend needed to transport someone in a wheelchair, but can't afford to keep it insured and licensed for the occasional use around here.

Hi SlowPoke,

Are you trying to lift person and chair into a Van or just lift the chair?

Your family member or a stranger? (liability)

Adult or child?

Person in the chair going to travel by themselfs or always with someone?

The reason I ask is temp for 6 to 8mths is making hauling alot easier.

The cheapest chair lift would be a power trailer tongue jack, about $189, that fits into a receiver with a platform. The chair is rolled onto the platform then raised off the ground then covered for transportation.

The above can be modified to fit many applications. What I use is a fold up chair but I can get into and out of a vechile by my self.

With more info, we can design you something that will work.

Caution about WC use. I would strongly urge the person to get out of the WC ASAP. Why? It's too easy to stay in one of them damn things and become dependant on them.

The lift would be for my wife. She had a tumor on the brain and the removal operation has caused left side paralisys. The surgeon said 6 months to 12 months of survival and the oncologist said 18-20 months. I'm going for at least 10 years to 85. She has regained most movement in the left arm, but it's still very weak. So there would be no liability. If radiation treatments are successful, she should be back to walking in a year or so.

I can probably get the van delivered in San Jose for a reasonable cost if that would help.

Hi Slowpoke,

Ok, I just designed a power lift that will load WC & person into a van. Weighs about 200lbs and fits into a standard 2" hitch receiver. Cost $350.

Lift stays with the van and folds up to the back van door when shut.

Hi: I had the same problem and I built a short ramp out of plywood and a couple of short 2 x4 pieces. Made it so it could be put in the back while we traveled.

I thought of that myself but people say it's too difficult to push someone up a steep incline. How long and wide was the ramp? I have about 9 feet between the seats and rear doors.
