Is there a ball park setting for oxygen and acetylene for heating, brazing, and cutting. I never know what to adjust the gauges at. Thanks for any help.

There are different setting for different models of torches. It is very important to get it right if you are using a rosebud. A pound can be the differance between burn back or not. Below is a link for everything you ever wanted to know about pressure includes what pressures for what model torches. The one that will come up is for rosebuds and if you look at the list at the left you may select cutting or welding.

Check back a few pages on this board for a post I made on torches, Wayne Swenson answered it and helped me out.

You should probably see if you can get a chart from the manufacturer of your torch, since they all have different ways of sizing tips. Some guidelines:

  • Oxygen and acetylene pressures are normally the same for a given size of brazing tips.
  • The bigger the tip, the more pressure it needs to keep from blowing out.
  • Very small brazing tips 3 psi Acetylene & 3 psi Oxygen
  • Small brazing tips need 5 & 5
  • Medium brazing tips need 7 & 7
  • Big brazing tips need 9 & 9
  • Rosebud tips need 13 & 13.
  • Cutting tips typically need about 10 psi Acetylene and 30-50 psi Oxygen
  • Acetylene pressure > 15 psig = ka-blooey!
  • Acetylene flow > 1/5 tank per hour = ka-blooey!

Here's a link to a tip charts for Harris and Victor; there's probably more out on the web.

My welding book says matched settings on welding tips 3-5 lbs. Size the tip with a numbered drill.
Cutting is 1-6 psi acetylene and higher oxygen 5-45 psi. Never exceed 15 psi acetylene.

Hi Lyle, 5 on Acetylene and 30 to 40 on oxy if tip is clean. Never more than 15 on acetylene. In 30yrs I don't think I've ever went above 7psi on acetylene.
