My nephew bought a home with an asphalt over concrete drive. Whoever paved it was not to good in the planning department and the asphalt is higher than the garage slab. He wants to cut a gutter in both the asphalt and crete and install a grated gutter in front of it. I can't imagine a masoary blade will work real well on the black top. What is the best way to go here?

Rent a walk behind floor saw with a gas engine and a diamond tipped blade. It doesn't matter whether you're cutting asphalt or concrete. Assuming 8" thick material get a 20" blade minimum. Hook up a garden hose to cool the blade and keep dust under control. Make 1" deep cuts only. 8" thick material requires 8 cuts. Be sure to wear safety glasses with side shields, full face shield, hearing protection and a dust respirator. Don't bother with those cheapo dust masks. A respirator offers much better protection. Any home improvement store, Lowe's, Home Depot, Menards sells precast trench grate. 4" wide should do it. This advice is from a general contractor senior project manager with 33 years experience.

Asphalt cuts rather easy, I would think a concrete/masonaary blade would work.

I once solved a similar problem by renting an asphalt grinder. Worked great.
