I had a leak in my air conditioning evaporator now thanks to a deer, who suffered more damage than my truck, I now have a leaking condensor also. I have no plans to fix the AC as it is my old work truck and remember hearing about AC compressors being turned into air compressors. Will this work and is it as easy as putting as opening up the low pressure side and installing a quick disconnect on the discharge side and jumping out a pressure switch? Might I need to put in a bypass regulator to prevent dead head?

Or should I just go to walmart and buy one of those 12V plug in the lighter types? Nope, sorry I asked that - that would just be way to easy now that I think about it.

Matthew, It will work for a while. you have to remember that the compressor oil circulates through the air cond system.

Did that once. Worked good, only tended to blow quite a bit of oil. Put filter on intake. Quick connect on outlet. Put on some kind of pressure pop off since they can pump 200 or more pounds.

I have been using an air compressor which I made from a piston type air conditioning compressor for at least 20 years. The main modification I made was to the lubricating system. I mounted it in vertical position, and drilled a hole thru the side of the crankcase, about an inch from the bottom. The crankcase is then filled with oil to this level. The area is then covered with copper mesh (pot and pan scraper)I then made a cover which bolts to the flange which exists around this area, using the four threaded holes already there. This cover is made so it does not cover the flange completly, but instead leaves a slot open at the top, which takes care of any pressure build up in th crankcase, The copper mesh prevents any oil from escaping. I then run the compressed air into a small tank . Any oil or condensation is trapped in this tank (requires draining about once a year)
For a safety / relief valve I used the relief valve from a household hot water heater, adjusted to open at about 90 lbs psi
On the intake side I simply covered the port with some more copper mesh scrubbing pad.
Works great, belted to a 5 horse Briggs and Stratton
