I have an old skeet thrower that has an aluminium arm that is 3.5" wide and varies in thickness from 1/8" to 1/2" thickness. It is broke in a straight line. Also the same machine has a 6.5" diameter x 1" wide gear that has a tooth missing. Could someone tell me the procedure for verifying the materials and the procedure for weld repairs.

I appreciate your comment on the above project. I contacted the manufacture which is Western White Flyer the old machine is electric and they told me to send the arm in and they would weld it. I have some welding experience and would like to try. Thank You

Hi Drifting,

Well I wasn't going to make a comment as I agreed with Mark, this is a non-repairable item. Why?

"The break sheared in a straight line"

This tells me there's a huge problem, design? Usually when metal shears in a straight line it's from fatique of a design problem.

Repair of this tpye could only cause more problems down the road and most likely injure someone.

You can get new ones at most stores for 19.99-40.00 cheaper than an e-room visit and dr bill.

Just so I understand:

You have a device that is intended to throw clay targets a couple hundred feet while you're standing next to it. It's broken in two places and you want to fix it?

No offense, but I suggest you throw it in the trash.

Maybe I'm a little touchy on this subject because of something that happened to me when I was a kid. I was hired one afternoon to load the trap machine at the local gun club. The shooting got pretty fast, and I didn't load a rock quite quick enough. The trap machine went off while the rock was still in my fingers. Fortunately, I was holding it by the top (the right way), and the only thing that happened was I got the beejeezus scared out of me when the rock exploded under my fingers. Since then, I've always had a healthy respect for trap and skeet machines.
