I was told over fifty years ago how to help burned fingers or any thing else on the hands or arms.I have used this method ever sense and it has never failed if I did not wait to use it. When you burn a spot immediately put the burned spot on the lobe of your ear for about a minute. After this you will have a little pain for a few hours, but less than without the treatment. After several hours there is no pain any more, and it will not blister. If the burn is second or third degree the burned skin will peal off after several days, but the skin underneath is fresh and dose not hurt when exposed.
I have told a lot of people about this, and no one has ever told me it did not work for them, but a lot of them have told me it did work.
I wish some one would do some testing and see if it is a substance that can be packaged for burns you cant get to your ear.
I hope this will help a lot of you that touch hot things like I do.

Mom told me to use vinegar and ice the ice cools the heat then the vinegar numbs the pain also works for jelly fish stings.

Company made us take a manditory Red Cross first aid class last week, and of course want to cool (ice, cold water) unless electrical burn, then don't touch. They say when you wrap to protect, wrap loosly. That's what they say, no oils or such.

Now for the fun part. One of my coworkers, we call him "Alex the mad Russian", because he's from the old country and has some kind of temper. He swears to smear sour cream on it. None of us, including the Red Cross lady had ever heard that one, so we rubbed it in (not sour cream) for the rest of the class. Cardiac arrest? Rub on sour cream? Heat stroke? Dip in sour cream. We had to stop though, cause old Alex was gettin' pretty mad, and if we hadn't, some of us were gonna be needin some first aid (sour cream) for real. He was maaaaad.

Hi Bob,

Never heard of the ear lobe trick and will have to give it a try.

When I was 10yrs old or so, I watched my Mother get blown accross the room from a gas furnace she was trying to lite.

The majority of the heat blast hit her on the face, burnt all of her eye brows off (both eyes), burnt all her eye lashs off (both eyes), burnt nose hairs and most of her hair 2" back off of her forehead.

She applied cold water then a burn medicene called Foil. Foil was for sun burns and such that was popular in the late 50's thru the early 70's. Close too a butter type product. No scars or blisters formed on her face.

Now that I'm more educated, I know what happened to cause this. Mom tried to lite the pilot lite than had blown out. The gas valve had pilot safety so she depressed the pilot lite button and tried to lite the pilot lite and it would not lite.

She heated the thermocouple enough with several stick matchs trying to lite the pilot that allowed enough heat to complete the safety circuit of the thermocouple allowing the main gas valve circuit to orperate.

When the pilot would not lite, she turned the gas valve to "on", and that caused raw main burner gas to be dumped into the combustion chamber without being ignitited, she then struck another match to lite the pilot.

She got the 2nd match (1st match went out) about 6" away from the burner fresh air inlet when the gas exploded.

I was lucky that I was standing 10ft away and didn't get any of the blast.

A Service man was called and all I remember him saying was that it was "impossible" to happen that way. Mom argued that was the secquence of events. I finally piped up with "just look at her face! "

It was dust on the pilot orifice that kept the pilot from lighting and why the furnace checked out ok.

Seams like a good reason to have your gas furnace/water heater serviced once per year like is recomended.

The Chineese have been using a honey, silver and herbs mixture for a burn medicine for several thousand years. Our current medical practices for burns now incorperate this mixture.

A few years back I burned the back of my wrist with a cutting torch.About three quarters of an inch wide and 2 inches long and at least 2 layers deep.I washed it up good and ran cold water onit for a while then covered it with bag balm and kept it wrapped up. took the sting out of the burn and it healed up fine, even the hair grew back.

I posted this to help some people with finger burns. I do not know how to apply it to other burns. But if it can be used it is far better than any other treatment.

Chances are the cream was Silvadene. I had to put this on a burn on my infant daughter for a burn from silver nitrate.

This is one worth knowing, especially if you are not near medical care or relief. My personal solution has been to keep a squeeze bottle of aloe-vera in the door of the fridge. Aloe is from cactus and it is extremely soothing on sunburns or other burns. Great during haying and especially soothing from being cold in the fridge.

My younger days were spent in a restaurant over the grill, etc., we used ice or cold water. The quicker you get it cold the better.

Your story reminds me of my grammy taking my out fishin for gills. I got stuck by a dorsal fin. She rubbed the side of the fish on the wound, 5 minutes later no pain.

There's a web page that explains why it works. It has to do with heat conductivity. I'll have to try it next time I solder, since it seems I'm always picking up the wrong end of the iron.

Not doubting that it works, but...

If it truly is a heat conductivity thing, wouldn't it make more sense to put it on any other room temperature object that is nearby? Assuming, of course, that room temperature is well below 98 degrees. A cold cement floor comes to mind.

Interesting though. I've never heard of this one. My mom always told me to put butter on a burn.

NEVER NEVER NEVER apply butter, oils, greasy salves to a fresh hot wound. Ice or cold clean liquids only and sooner the better to stop the cooking process. Limits swelling and edima which causes secondary circulation and healing problems. Butter etc just seals the heat in. Dry sterile coverings over the wound. The barrier to bacteria entry has been damaged( your skin).
