The "free product test" bit is the real scam. They make it sound like a great deal, it's not.

They send you a pencil to test first. I'm not kidding, it's a pencil. Included with this is a book that they didn't mention you are now going to buy unless you send it back.

Of course, you didn't know the package had a book and pencil in it, so you opened it. Now you can't just return it, you've got to pay postage to have it sent back. Isn't that nice?

If you send the book back (you can keep the pencil), you're out of the free product testing club. The only way to get in and stay in is to keep buying their handyman book each month when it comes.

There's nothing special in the magazine itself. In fact, it's a dead ringer for one of the other handyman type magazines, right down to the same articles. Whatever magazine did the glue test last month, that's the one Handyman magazine duplicates.

Oh, and when you send the book back, you can expect them to insist they never got it, and you owe them the full price. After a few months, they do back off and go away.

But wait, there's more! They come back about a year later praising you for all your wonderfull product testing experience and want to promote you to a special "pro" level membership. For $250 they will send you several chinese knockoff powertools to keep, give you a lifetime subscription, and get you started on the inside track of the good product testing.

Save your money! Have found most of their magazine stuff pretty elementry. The free stuff they sent was useless..... Chinese carpenter pencils with "lead" that broke off. But who knows? It just may be the ticket for many. Was always curious and did join, but won"t re-new.

Those little decals they send you work really good for covering up the rusty spots on your tool box.
