Check with a small engine shop, they might loan you one. I have one given to me by a friend - plastic housing about the size of a snuff or chewing tobacco can. Has a dial on the front calibrated in rpm and Hz, and a piece of piano wire sticks out the side. You advance the dial until the wire vibrates at it's maximum amplitude at 1/4 wave, while the case is in contact with the machine, and take the reading. Have checked it against a electronic frequency counter I use for two way radio shop and it's very accurate. Don't have a source of them but someone may..... Can't be too expensive!

Hi Jason, Try any refrigeration supply house, Johnstones, Grangiers, as there very popular for HVAC. Any tach will work for telling shaft speed as the mechcanial ones do "slip" sometimes if oil is present on the shaft end. I use a digitel one on my VOM as it's much closer and no shaft precleaning required without slipage. These were not available when your book was written.

If your NAPA doesn't have one, they should be able to order one. If I remember right, they are around $30.

If you can't get one at NAPA, McMaster Carr, has them, do a search on Tachometer. Grainger probably does as well.

I'll bet they are a lot more than $30 though. I you are near a diesel repair shop, ask them about a photo tach. You might be able to work out some way to have them check your shaft speed for you.
