I happened to watch a small part of monster garage last night and they went off to a section on racing belt sanders. These guys soup up belt sanders and race them. They go like you can't believe.

Don't know a thing about racing them, buy I like using them for metal removal. First one I saw was my first real job, shop made spars and rigging for sailboats. It was a 2 1/2 by 60 inch belt, run by a maybe 3 or 5 hp motor at 3450 rpm, not get this, was belted up to about twice motor rpm and the contact wheel was about 7" in diameter. I'll tell you that thing hummed! If you broke a belt on it it would scare the #$%@ out of you, although nothing ever really happened when this happened. We used to grind aluminum castings, stainless parts, and sharpen drills on it. I made a smaller version for myself with a Baldor rubber contact wheel about 6" x 2" face running at about 3450 rpm, the belt is a 2x 48", love it, use it all the time. Beware though,a belt sander will take skin off real fast and it is a painfull wound that takes a while to heal. I have learned not to bet bit too bad by now. I hope.

That was impressive. That one was chain driven with a grinder motor on it.
