I am going to buy a compressor to spray finishes with a HVLP spray gun what HP, tank size, and CFM should the compressor conform to. I am looking at a Coleman 4HP, 20 gallon compressor that produces 8.8 CFM at 40 PSI and 7 CFM at 90 psi. will this suit my needs.

Thanks in advance for any advice any of you can give me.

I don't think that compressor is big enough for what you want to do. For some good advice from experts go to Link

Hi hope all is well, In Sept I bit the bullet and bought a IR t-30 two stage. true 5 horse, 60 gal tank, puts out 17 cfms at 175 bought it at NAPA and paid 1040 for it. It will be a liftime investment for me. i can spray eight ounces of paint before it kicks on, the less on time, the cooler the air and the less moisture it will contain good luck and go big if you can Paul

We recommend that you buy an Oil Cooled compressor
rather than an air cooled one. They last longer
and a compresor is always a good investment. They run
around 349.00 for a Campbell Housefield/Craftsman
5hp with a 25 gallon tank. This is more than enough to paint with if you are not a professional
painter who would be using it daily.

Check out TIP at WWW.tiptools.com
They have a complete system with a turbine in place of the compressor. It works great I would never go back to compressor painting. Get a compressor if you want to run tools, but use the turbine system for painting.

I would suggest that whatever size you think you need try and get a larger one.I think that a 5hp single stage w/60 gal tank is about minimum(unless it has to be portable) and is not that much higher(from somewhere like Northern or Home Depot).Maybe not for the HVLP but other air tools will run the 20 gal down fairly fast.My opinion only,Mark

From what I've seen the HVLP guns use bout 10 SCFM @ 50# and the compressor your looking at won't do it in my opinion. Like Mark said if it doin't need ta be moved go with at least a 5hp.I got a 6hp 60gal at Wal-mart for $379.00 not much more than what you'll pay for the one your looking at.Besides when ya get it yer going ta want air sanders, wrenches, maybe even a sandblaster boy are they fun!!
