I recently bought an old masport rota-hoe with a Briggs & Stratton 5hp engine - 131232 model (points and condenser). It had been sitting in storage for about 10 years. I cleaned it up, filled with fresh oil, fuel & started engine. It ran for about 10 seconds & stopped. I checked the coil & the spark had become very weak, although if I shorted out my finger from the spark plug lead to earth i would get a good tingle, but no spark across spark plug gap.
I purchased a second hand coil and fitted it to the unit and it started - this time it ran for about 5 minutes and the same thing happened again - spark had become so weak that it would not fire, but still unpleasant to short out across your finger.
Any ideas on what could cause coils to fail prematurely or is this a common thing as the coils for these things are expensive

It sounds as though you may have a condensor problem. A coil usually is dead when it is dead. It does not loose spark intesity. Did you buy Briggs points or an aftermarket. You might also file the new points, I have seen new one that get oxidized and need to be cleaned right out of the box.

It may be the condenser.I have only replace 2 or 3 coils on the old B&S in all the years I have repaired them.Check ground, check points, check gap between flywheel& coil.Good Luck

Already replaced the points and condenser with brand new ones. checked gaps etc. Definately the coil is bad.

When ever I change the magnetos(coils) on the older Briggs & Stratton engines I use the solid state ones that do not need points or condensers. I find they are much more reliable than the old ones. Hope this helps
