Hi All, This is tractor related because I'm going to pull my tractor with it. :)

I'm buying a new 2001 Dodge 3/4 ton, 4x4, diesel and they offer a 6spd tranny with the high output(HO) diesel. They want another $900 for this combo and from what I can see it's not worth it. I can't get them to tell me the gear ratio to see where the power is.

The HO diesel puts out 245hp @ 505 ft/lbs w/6spd where the standard diesel is 235hp @ 345 ft/lbs w/5spd, torque.

Anyone got one???

Get a real truck!!!! after that cummins my third V10 says it all. Get a real motor with real horsepower. Before you start about that mileage stuff. Do the math on overall expense. If you would like I can send you proof that I run my V10 for no more than you can run that dam cummins. I can outpull the cummins, ford v10 anf that powerstroke should be just plain stroked (your pocketbook)

T-Bone,,,,,since you're probably buying this at a dealership, excuse yourself from the salesman, and go find the shop foreman/service manager, he will be able to find you the gear ratios in the shop manuals. Been through the brochures and they only give general specifications which is why the salesman can't answer you. Have driven the 6speed and can only say they are awesome, just can't really say the low gears are different ratio than the 5speeds. A couple of customers have wanted the 6-speeds installed in their 99 and earlier trucks, and the price of a 6-speed is heftier than the 900 you stated for the whole package. Also been thru the Dodge sites here on the web, they also give everything but the gear ratios. Talk to the transmission man at the dealership too. He can tell you about livability and gear ratios of the 6-speed.

Hi John, I got lucky late last night a found a web site for all info on Dodge Trucks, gear ratios, comparision on 5spd vs 6spd rpm to mph for each gear on both, complete parts break downs on both gear boxes, Transfer case, Cummins engine, etc:

If you haven't looked take a walk thru as it worth it. I decided to go with a automatic because of the 5spd twisted output shaft after 150K and the clutch is too small for the torque, and the 6spd is still having problems, gears breaking from torque.

T-Bone,,, thats a good site, hadn't seen it before, glad you made a decision on the truck. Have seen the new style Dodges at 180k and 240k and the cabs are still tight, much better than the earlier ones! Just the heavy 4x4s do like to eat the track bar every 40k or so.

Hi John, Well I thought I had my mind made up but it looks like I need to go look at a Ford just to make sure. I like the Cummins power torque band much better than the Ford band but I like Fords "hubs" over Dodges full time system. Dodges fake axle split on the front axle is not very impressive and engaugement sucks under some conditions. I'm trying to find out now if hubs are available as an after market item.

T-Bone, Okay, I can say the Ford Diesel is pretty gutsy too. My own preference is the Dodge, partly because of the cab, it just fits my 6ft. better. Can't say we've seen much failure on the 4x4 engagement, outside of outright abuse, some of it very violent abuse. And extreme high mileage, like 130k, of which 75k was in a feedlot. Chevy and Jeep have been using it for some time too. Am seeing some of the new Fords with front lockouts, factory. Depends how far you can get them to dig in the option book. Oh, look at the frames, at the rear, it seems to me that the Dodge 2500 frame rails look as tough if not more so than the f-350. If you're going to add a 5th wheel. Also for toughness get the salesmen to show you the recommendations on snow plow usage between the two trucks. It could point some strengths out.

Hi John, I went back and took a good look at the Ford F250. F250 to a Dodge frame was close and so was the F350 built on the F250 frame. F250 has a heavyier front axle with hubs. On a Dodge there front frame is thickness is a little thiner but not much. Dodge has that torsion arm system with coil springs and the torsion arms look weak as it's not closed tube. Ford has the leaf spring system on the front and much stronger.

Now the real big difference was the F350 built on the F450,F550 frame. That is a very heavy built frame and axle system for about $1k more with hubs. Fords auto lock system is off the wheel hub and not off the axle like the Dodge.

What Dodge has is one great buy over the Ford. I'm going to get the Dodge for $28k plus 36 mth .9%. I was going to pay cash but if I take the same money and put it out on 5.9% interest, Dodge will pay me $8800 for 3 years to drive there truck or $21,200 cost for for three years. A deal I can't refuse.
Had it not been for this I would have bought the Ford!!!

T bone. Glad you finally landed on one. This much money makes a guy back off and look em over real hard. The Ford F150 with torsion bars has had a lot of breakage, while Dodge with 40 years experience with Torsionbars almost none. The auto lock hubs for snow plow work, or real work are bad news, as every time you back up they unlock and relock, putting quite a shock into the axle with the power of the diesel. The Dodge axle lock is positive and stays engaged until you disenegage it. The Dodge Cab, under dash access, and underhood access are tremendous compared to all comers. That Cummins is also a great cold weather starter not requiring multiple glow plug runs even below zero. Work at a place that sells both Ford and Dodge, so drive a lot of them every week. My heart is set on a Dodge when I need a heavy truck again. John,. Heh, Heh, this is some message board ain't it!!

Run,don't walk, and buy it !!!900.00 is nothing for what you get in performance. The new six speed is THE thing to have, and somewhat hard to get, they haven't made to many. If you never had a Dodge with a Cummins yourin fora real treet-----Jim in N M

Hi Jim, Well I was concerned about the mpg more than anything and yes this is my first cummins and I'm really looking forward to it, just not the money. :(

If you have one cummins, 4x4 please let me know what you get for mpg.

I don't think there is much of a warranty on a manual tranny and clutch. If it is on a automatic that is different. Found that out the costly way, course that was on a Fix Or Repair Daily truck.
