Sioux Valve Grinder info needed

I'm considering buying a valve grinder and need info on the model I'm looking at and wondered if anyone here could help. The info I have is that it's an "Albertson & Co. Sioux Valve Face Grinding Machine", Model# 5KH45AB579B, cat. No 620. The owner sent some pics and it looks to be fairly old. He says it's not liquid-cooled(where the valve face is being ground) like the newer models, but rather it's "air cooled". Can anyone tell me the approximate age of this machine and whether or not it would be better to find a newer liquid-cooled machine? Thanks!

I have the wet type and have had the type you are talk"N bout". It did a good job you just have to go slow. If you are not a high volume user it should work out fine. What otter good�ies you get with it will set the price.

its old,, souix hasnt made a dry grinder in 50-60 years. that coolant means alot,without it that valve can get red hot ,so how are you going to get it out of the grinder and it wont be as true as a cooled grinder. if you only grind say 2 valves every once in a while you may be ok,but doing a few sets a day for a v8 would be a pain.i prefer the kwik way grinder, and parts are available. lucas

Obviously the liquid cooled is better but I wouldn't worry too much about it. If the machine is in good shape and the price is right go for it.

Problem is the machine's 5 hrs away and I'd like to find out a bit about it before I make the drive to see it in person. The price isn't bad, but it's no steal either. Wouldn't want to buy something so old I couldn't get parts for it. I've run quite a few Sioux valve grinders before, all were liquid-cooled, and all were grey in color. This one is orange, so I'm thinking it must be pretty old. The guy claims late 50's-early 60's, but I know some of the grey ones I've run were at least that old. Was hoping someone on here had experience with these or had an old parts book or something.

My wife's grandfather had an old Souix and it was a red or orange color. It was a very good machine but you had to pay closer attention to it than usual. With a recent machine, you just slap a valve in and go for it without any thought at all. With the old one, you needed to pay attention that you didn't move the valve stop in the chuck or things like that. I used it before he sold it a few years ago and did a fine job. I just had to remember it was as old as I was.

Ron, I am not wanting to change your mind but I know of a Sioux valve face grinder, it is grey and out of a school, it looked like new,Model number was, if I remember was a 618??? it had the oil cooler on it, and a Sioux valve seat grinder, and a valve stone dresser for the stones for the valve seat grinder here in Western Iowa. This was about 3 weeks ago. Give me a call 712 882 2258
