I have a '99 Ford F250 SD with the Powerstroke diesel and the 6 speed manual transmission. Lately the transmission has become difficult to shift, especially for the first several miles of driving. The problem is in all gears and affects both downshifts and upshifts. The clutch seems to disengage OK when pressed, and the lube oil is at the level of the test plug. Does anyone have any ideas of the cause and a fix for it? Does the shift mechanism have lubrication points that I should attend to?

I also have a 99 6spd, I've found a number of bulletins against the clutch that could explain your problem.
The clutch forks were defective and prone to cracking which causes the clutch to not fully dis-engauge.
The clutch master and slave cylinder have been upgraded several times, and as mentioed already the early clutches themselves were junk.
I replaced the fork and cylinders myself. When we pulled the pressure plate it and the disc looked perfect so for 4 hours of my own labor I took a chance and put it back together with the old clutch. That was a year and a half ago and it's still going strong.
The shaft/lubrication issue is new to me. I'm going to have to research that one before mine tears up!!

change the transmision fluid first. when the oil gets old it will shift hard.

I have a 99 that had the same problem, there is a tech bullentin on it. I don't remember the number. Anyway its not your trans mission, its the clutch, they were defective, I replaced the clutch, Also you may have to modify your transfer case. There is one shaft in it that needs to be modified to allow for oil flow. I found out too late, after the transfer case gave out. If you plan on keeping the truck you are gonna have to do both. I did at between 100-125K.

Hi GWPT,

The 99"s had a dual mass flywheel where"s the 2000 up did not.

99 has a known problem for the pilot bushing failing, taking out the input shaft and clutch disc, shift fork problems. From users comments on thedieselstop.com, a new Kelvar pilot bushing is working well. Look for a user named Pat Dolan as he"s replaced two transmissions and 3 clutchs on a F550 7.3, 6spd.

There"s been several complaints that when the pilot bushing goes so does the input shaft and disc.

SouthBend clutch seams to be better built and more rated for the torque than other after market clutchs.

The only problem with my 02 F350, 6spd, 7.3 was a leaking master cylinder (leaking at push rod) at 1000miles. Replaced master and slave and alls been well for 16k miles.
