I have a 97 ford ranger and would like to get some brighter lights for all the night time critters on the road. I looked on E-bay and there are several kinds: clear crystal, HID, Xenon mix. What are pros and cons? Can these be used in stock lenses or do I need special lenses? Do they genereate more heat? draw more power? thanks, Andy

J C Whitney has a good selection of higher wattage bulbs but a big AMEN to the life issue. I put a set in my Cadillac less than a year ago and one of them burned out last week while I was on the road. I bought a premium brand name replacement at Walmart (Sylvania, I think) and it seems as bright as the other hi-power side. Much of the advertising is just hype. I chose clear halogen with higher than stock wattage.

Seems visibility has dropped on a lot of veh's since they went to platic lens and halogen bulbs. I do know that certain bulbs get hot as h---. Also I do know that some require an ungraded wire system, whether they say so or not. I would go to the ford dealer and ask the shop tech what they recommend or if they use something different. Some GM's it seems have had recalls to correct some of their lighting problems. Have you considered just installing an under the bumper set of running lights. Also some of the aftermarket bulbs dont last very long. I will take the old sealed beams anytime.
