I have an old induction 1hp elec motor that I need to change out. It's a high start load, I see a good deal on a 2hp capacitor electric motor. Think I will try that, a 2hp should give enough extra start torq to match the old induction motor?

I have a 2.5" vbelt pulley on the motor driving a 15" driven pulley. The new motor would have a 1.125" shaft on it. Can I get a 2.5" pulley that fits this shaft, or is 3" as small as I can go? Then how much more increase in demand would the bigger pulley put on the motor? (I'm driving a flat conveyor belt 40' long, speed is not so critical, the fact that it will start up is. I'm on 230v single phase, unfortunately the supply wires to the building are not overly large....)

Just looking what to do to change from that old high-torq induction motor to a regular modern motor, and dealing with a rather underpowered farm wiring supply here.

Need to get back to the field, or I'd do my own research. Thanks. Dern mice.

Well, thanks all. The 2hp regular motor (reconditioned, 1/2 price) works fine with the slightly bigger pulley. It only has to move 4000 bu of ear corn in the crib every year, so a little extra power draw is not that big a deal. Just happy it works! :) Got about 1/4 done.

Using a motor with a HP rating higher than the load requires is not really a good idea. It causes a low power factor which means that a higher than required current is running through your wires. This is current that you are paying for but isn't doing any work for you. Best to use a high starting torque compressor duty motor of the right size.

Browning has about the best selection of small pulleys. You can check them out at the link below. (They are owned by Emerson Power Transmission) You can find the pulley you need, get the part number, and the find a distributor in your area.

The capacitor motor is likely an induction motor that has capacitor start. The old motor might be repulsion-induction, starting being by the repulsion mechanism. They are complicated, expensive and heavy- and when working properly, wonderful. They have the highest starting torque and lowest starting amps draw of any of the induction-run single phase motors. Useful on old-low amp services. I doubt anyone makes them anymore. The new motor will draw lots more amperes when starting- will that work for you?

You are right; and that's kinda the question. :)

Guess we will find out. I assume during load both motors draw about the same amps, it is just the startup issue for me.

Browning Hub systems, or Dodge, come with some pretty slim bushings, so I wouldn't be surprised if you could stay with the 2.5 OD. If not, you could use a jackshaft in between or just switch the 15 inch to a larger one to maintain the same ratio and speed.

Hi Paul,

On replacing motors, always use run load ampreage and RPM of the old motor when choosing the new motor. Using this method requires no upgrade to the supply wiring and will preform like the "old" motor.

Check out Browning sheaves as most have a replacable tapered bushing insert to match most common shaft sizes at a reasonable cost.

Get what is called a compressor duty motor and you should do ok. Also you should be able to get just about any size pulley you want for that motor.
