I have been reworking this chainsaw to get it back into good working order and have gotten it there with one small problem.

The gas tank has two hole in the top near the carb chamber. One is for the gas tube to pass from the tank to the carb inlet and the other is a little bigger, with nothing in it. It now leaks oil out of the other hole.

Have I broken some kind of breather or something off of this hole?

I have picture if someone wants to look at it. Thanks for any help.

Actually, after looking at the parts lists and pics for a 2800 (mine) a 3400 and a 3450, I find the 3450 is very much like my 2800 and the 3400 is not so much like the 2800. Neither the 3400 or the 3450 show the vent valve in the tank in the parts breakdowns.

Follow the links to the M&D electronics parts as I described previously and select the 2800 instead. select "external power unit" and in a side box in the pic you see items 103, 92, 100, 101 which is the hose a fitting and the check valve, this is the stuff you need. and you can see the two holes in the tank in the drawing.

By the way, the tubing for mine (I don't know if the 3400 is the same), is a yellowish translucent TYGON brand tube, marked TYGON F-4040-A and was 3/16 OD and about 3/32 ID.

Hope this helps more.

Charles.

Well, I just got finished replacing the rotten fuel hose on my 2800 forester and it runs so much better!

My 2800 appears to be nearly identical in construction and layout to your 3400. It had two fuel hoses going into the tank. The aft hose extended inside and had the filter on it and was the "flop" hose, it went to the inlet on the LH (choke knob side) of the carb. The forward hose from the tank, the larger hole had a hose pass thru it and had a funny little one way check/vent valve on it. You pull the hose thru and out the filler neck, put the check valve on the hose, which expands it, and pull the hose back up into the hole, while pushing on the valve/vent with a finger sticking thru the filler opening. When properly pushed up in the hole the slightly expanded hose seals tite in the larger hole. the hose runs up the LH side of the carb past the gas inlet and over the top and down the right side where it ends. It is merely a tank vent. There is a third hose, runs from a fitting on the crankcase and goes to the RH side of the carb, opposite the inlet hose. It is some kind of pump pulse or balance hose. Was rotten and broken on mine and it didn't run well without it, but great after I replaced all three hoses.

I went to the Poulan web site and looked for manuals for your 3400, the search didn't turn up anything. Its a goofy web site, won't give you a list of manuals that are available, but rather makes you input the model and returns with the "none found" leaving you wondering what you could do differently to locate the manual. Not too friendly.

Go to

Link

And select "Illustrated parts diagrams online" and then when the new window opens expand the window to full screen and then click on the "click here for parts lookup" and using the "catalogs" drop down box in the upper left, select Poulan/Weedwater... then Poulan.... then Gas.... then Saw... then select your model saw. There are several drawings and a complete parts list. This is great. They have this electronic parts manual for a whole bunch of differnt brands of saws, trimmers, mowers, etc.

Hope this helps,

Charles
