Over on the TRACTOR TALK discussion board (Nov. 6) I've posted a few questions about Battery Chargers. If you get a minute and know something about chargers, could you flip over and see if you can help me out? Thanks.

Mike, I agree with T-Bone. Lead acid batt are 2.2 volts per cell, so a 6 volt battery actually read around 6.6 volts at 100% charge resting. This voltage will read higher for a few hours after charging because of "surface charge". Chargers are as varied as there cost, manual, timer, automatic, automatic with taper charge, etc. Chargers are going to have to put out about 112% of stated batt voltage to accomplish a charge (6v batt., about 7+ volts. 12v batt., about13.5+ volts) The higher the charge rate( read that faster charging, higher amps) the higher the charge voltage. Lead acid batt. should never be stored with anything less 100% charge or chemical damage will occur (lead plate sulferization). Use a hydrometer to check the state of charge of a battery during charging or during storage. Most chargers put out pulsating DC voltage, most meters measure RMS voltage which is average voltage. If your 6 volt charger is putting out less that 7 or so volts with no battery attached, i'd say something is wrong with your charger. Unless You have a very smart charger. NAPA sells one. It is smart enought to realise when a battery is connected, when it is shorted, connected wrong, etc. these units vary output voltage depending on the conditions it "sees" at the cables. Check WWW.homepower.com/ for charging tables and detailed info.
