Has anyone used a old bbq tank as a portable air tank. I have one of those kits for a freon tank, but no tank. Id liketo just use a bbq tank.

I have a 30gal unit that has a bad valve. I cannot get the doggone bad valve off that tank! I tried a big crescent wrench and a hammer but I cannot get the valve to turn. Is it reverse threaded? Anybody know the secret to getting it off? It"s never been used and only has air in it.

yeah, there tough. I use a 4 inch nylon web sling.
1 wrap the sling around the tank once and place the tank on its side.
2 drive a vehicle over the strap to hold it tight
3 use a 1 inch "crowfoot" wrench end or what they call a "weather head " drive(at least 1/2 drive) with a 6 inch extention and twist counter clock wise.

I have this down good,I have been scraping the brass valves $$$$$$$$$$
Wash the tanks out with the presure washer and cut them up with a air chisel.

Do yourself a favor and buy a new one. The reason is the old gas in there, The stink and the possible KABOOM factor. If you have a tire changed and they smell propane...HO BOY! I have two 30lb "the bigger ones" as air tanks for over 10 years. Work great. Out in Lancaster area the menonite use the big ones for air storage. Just like in another post on here. They run all kinds of air tools, even air power ceiling fans with air from a diesel rig. No electric thus no gas engines. Emglo makes a lot of good cast iron pumps and Quincey etc. Pumps do wear out and need new rings or valves etc. What happens when you put a rebuilt pump on a system where the unloader is gunked shut for years- after the worn pump could'nt kick it off? 100lb system- 1000 gallon air tank in basement of house- new ring job pump-fresh rebuilt pump can now put out a LOT more than 100lb????? !!!!! !!!!
1000 gallon air tank go BOOM and lift house off foundation about 6 inches! This aint no urbin legend. I saw the house and it was a little sideways if you know what I mean. They did a jack job on it. Two weeks later it was back where it should be.

A voice of reason!!! in reply to jeffcat, 10-07-2004 20:05:58
I'm with Jeffcat, don't do it. There is a reason that presurized gasses have different valves and threads. It's to keep stupid people from killing themselves. Buy a tank intended for air. Even if you think you know what you are doing. what if someone is using your tools and hooks up you air tool to a propane take that is still a propane tank...

I believe the pop off valve on a bbq tank is set at 375psi so should hold what ever you can dish out. I looked at a pressure chart and see propane is 122 psi at 70 degrees, 190psi at 100 degrees. (typical TX summer day)

You will be fine using one for air. I have used the small ones and the big tall ones as well. I run 150 PSI shop air pressure and have never had a problem. They will take that and more. A whole lot safer than an old freon bottle any day.
The fitting you need to fit the propane bottle is called a POL fitting. It will have the left hand thread for the bottle and a ¼” pipe thread on the other end.

Have Fun.

freon tanks are not as thick walled as a propane tank anyhow, propane tanks are much safer in my opinion, all you need to do is get the little lefthand adapter off an old gas grill regulator and put a t on there so ya have a gauge and a air coupler then your good to go, we use the 30 lb propane tanks that they use on RVs, they hold more air and dont weigh much more or take up much more space realy

I have used propane tanks for air tanks. if you do a search for the test pressure of propane tanks you will find that it's around 350-400 I think. also I think the test pressure is stamped on the tank or on the tag. I would test any tank I used with 50-75-100 lbs more than what I needed with no one around.
