Lock spring broke on my 2-year-old Craftsman table saw. Went to Parts Center and gave guy the parts number. He pulled it up on the computer and said "price is $2.49 - plus $5.00 shipping charge". I told him that I'd prepay the part and he could order it in with their regular parts order and I'd pick it up and save the shipping charge. (That is what PorterCable, Delta, Skil & Bosch do). He says he can't do that because "It's company policy". This is a flat spring that they can stuff in a small padded envelope and mail for 74 cents or less.

Anybody want to buy my Craftsman tools? [Actually, I'll put most of them on our garage sale in November.] It's time to abandon Sears totally!

Alot of it has to do with our American addiction to cheap consumer goods. If we were more loyal to Sears as a company, Sears would be more loyal to its customers.
Instead we as "savvy consumers" look for the lowest price. The lowest price is rarely the the best deal though.
Look at Snap-on, their tools are hardly the best price, but about anybody who makes a living with tools uses them. You can feel the difference when you pick up a Snap-on wrench though.
The problem is with power tools manufacturers know that our loyalty is only to price that we will almost always go for the cheapest or second cheapest items. So it doesn't pay for them to make anything good. Until our buy it cheap consumerism society changes expect to be buying crap.

It costs a ton of money just to keep the doors open on a parts center. You go in to order a $3 part and it costs a lot more than that for the guy to help you. That"s where the S&H (handling) comes in. I think there is another option that is more distasteful to me. I went into the Chevy dealer today to buy a plug for a brake light. They"ve been using the same plug on every Tahoe, Suburban, etc. for 10 years. 2 wires, not very special, not weatherpak or anything. TWENTYONE dollars picked up at the counter. Obviously, substantial S&H was just built into the base price.
Life is just pretty damned expensive these days.

Where I live used to have a service center but sears closed and moved everything to INDY to save money. It was nice to get any sears part the same day.

I have a Craftsman 10 inch compound miter saw that is about five years old and very dangerous to operate because the lower plastic swinging guard is broken. They said that the guard is no longer available.

I have a perfectly good 1/2" commercial drill, except the reversing switch is broken.

I tried to order it from Sears Parts and they said it was no longer available. I have looked far and wide for any replacement, without success.

I guess that is the new trend in big business. When I buy a new one, It certainly won't be a Craftsman brand.

If you can determine the manufacturer of the drill- the first 3 numbers in the model number identify that and Sears probably will tell who that is- you might be able to get the switch from the manufacurer. JC Penney sold tools for a while and the switch went bad on my drill several years later. No parts from Penney at all. Found out my drill was from Skil and did get the switch I needed from a Skil repair center.

The price of the part is $2.49 + $5.00 for S&H. If they priced the part at $7.49 with free shipping, people would order it and be happy as a clams at high tide.

What about when you run into a minimum dollar value per order? To me that is worse than the S&H charge and is usually a lot higher.

As for $5 S&H, I would venture a guess that the per minute fully loaded (salary + insurance + FICA + unemployment + building costs + administration + taxes + profit, etc, etc.) charge out-rate of a warehouse clerk to be something like a dollar. If you figure out how many minutes it takes for the desk clerk to take the order, the stockroom clerk to fill the order and the shipping room clerk to get it packed up and out the door, then add in the actiual shipping costs, $5 is probably a bargain!

dont know if online shopping is any less on shipping but here's the link if you want to give it a try. If shipping is the same, then at least you save on gas going and coming.

That flat shipping charge is pretty much industry standard. From Sears to Lowes, Ford to JD, they all tend to do it. I don't like it, though I do understand it. It's far easier and quicker to specify a flat rate shipping then to actually take the time and effort to go and calculate it. As well, it then covers handling time and costs.

I must be differant, I have never had anything but great service from Sears (craftsman/tools is the only thing I shop for, wife has to do the other shopping). Both quality and service keeps me going back. Maybe that just me, everywhere and every one is differant.

I got a beat up old crapsman riding mower. When something goes out on it, I buy tool parts too. When you double up on parts you save on shipping even though they come from different places.

My 4 1/2 grinder really cound use a new switch but the mower ain't broke yet.

I suspect it costs sears nearly $5 for you to show up at the counter. I think you should give up Sears and shop Montgomery Wards.

I found out at sears, it seems if you talk to 10 different people you get 10 different answere's. This overcharge anymore on S&H is really a sore spot with me. Me thinks it is a rip off, all over and with different company's. However, I had all the parts on my recall radial saw replaced at absolutely no charge what so ever. But, I had a Hoover sweeper taken in for the yearly svc and they "lost" it for about 3 weeks.

this is NOT about crapsman tools, but it still shows the insaneness of today's business. a SKIL brand drill i have was on a nationwide recall for possible bad battery pack. all i had to do was call a free 800 number to get another one. yea right. they want me to mail my drill(at my cost) to them so they can verify it was on the recall and then they will send a coupon to me so i can get another drill. do they really think i am dumb enough to fall for that one? and even if i did, i would still be without a drill for several weeks? months? who knows. why not have it set up at the local dealer for me to just take it in and get another one right there. makes more sense to me.

Hay, I had 2 Skils that were recalled because of bad chargers. Shipped them both for $4.50, and in less than 2 weeks I had 2 new drills that were better than the old ones. Since my old drills were 4 or 5 years old I thought it was a great deal.
