Allan,
Here in my aera they go for a dollar a gallon. This is what the dealer here will charge for a used tank. on the other hand if you have one for sale and call the dealer, they will only pay $125.00 for a 250 gallon tank. most every one here will stick a forsale sign on the tank for a buck a gallon and the tank will be gone in a few days.

Bob,

We torn down an old trailer house down on the farm. This left that little tank just setting out there in the wind and not too far from the road.

A fellow called me Sunday evening wanting to buy the thing and I figure I might as well, because if I don't someone's gonna steal it anyway because there is no one ever around that place.

Wouldn't take much effort to throw one of those things in the back of a pickup and just drive off.

I just didn't know what to charge him for it.

Thanks for asking tho,

Allan

Allan, lots better things to do with propane tank rather than swapping it for money..... ..think barbecue!!!! Of course, you'll have to deal with the "hand wringers" on here when you start thinking about cutting it open. With a 250 gallon barbecue grill, you could throw a "feed" for all your so-called friends on here.....

Storage or nurse? Nurses are cheaper in my hood due to the LP tractor going by the wayside. 50 cents is about right. New 1000 gal storage are going for 89 cents, 500 bout a dollar.

One of our local gas companies sold out, the new outfit wants to get out of the tank rental business so they are selling the customers the tanks, the rate is $1 per gal. My wife wants us to buy our tanks so she can paint it (black and white) like a cow. Good enough reason to buy a tank as any.

I might be wrong, but I once read or heard it is dangerous to paint a tank any color besides white or silver, due to dark colors getting too hot in the sun, causing expansion & too-high pressure in tank.

Hi Davis,

I used to have a 500 gal on an irrigation pump and told the fill guy to run clear up to 100% as the darned thing was running all the time anyway.

One hot July day, he filled it at about 10:30 am and at noon she popped off. It was really something to see that propane shooting straight up in the air about 50 feet.

As soon as the pressure dropped back down, she sealed herself again.

Allan,

Had the same thing happen here in the opposite corner of NE last spring. Propane guy from the Co-op loaded the tank up to 95% early one AM. Get a call at work from the wife about 3 PM. She says the tank is hissing. Told her to call Co-op and see what they say. I get home about 3 hours later and the pop off valve is still hissing slightly. Wife tells me the Co-op guy says to tap the pop off valve and it should quit. I reaches up with a half full beer bottle and VERRRRRY GENTLY tap the valve. Sucker pops off all the way! Scares the bejeeses out of me, momma, kid, dog, cats, etc. Makes the branches on the big oak tree hanging over the tank look like a tornado in progress, and sounds like 25 F-16's at full afterburner. About 20 seconds of this and a loud pop and she seals off.
Next time I'll tap with something longer than a beer bottle!

I used to haul LPG during the off farming months.

One year I was treated to an insurance company demonstration showing firemen what to do in the event of fires with LPG tanks.

A burner was placed under a 500 gallon tank, turned on and lit. Soon tank pressure built up to the point of popping the excess pressure off. The fuel coming out of the pop off then ignited or was ignited with a torch if need be.

Kind of like a jet engine as previously described. The flames leap into the air about 30 to 50 feet. Needless to say the demonstration was a real traffic stopper on the nearby street.

As long as the jet engine sound is going everything is okay. If the sound gets extremely shrill---GET THE HECK OUT OF THERE as the tank pressure is building faster than the pop off can get rid of it---meaning the tank may explode.

A lof of fire fighters are less than thrilled with the demonstration, but do learn to understand that LPG and tanks are not to be feared as most do.

The world keeps changing. I think you would have a very difficult time finding a supplier in my part of Minnesota to fill anything but a silver tank, and it would need a full system check before they hook up to it the first time. Even if you run it empty now, they won't fill it until you are present & they reinspect everything.

Liability insurance went up 500% for these companies in the last 3 years, and thats _if_ they do all this extra stuff.....

Maybe they haven't gotten to your area yet, hope not.

Allan, it's been awhil since I saw one sell at farm auctions but I think $2.00 a gallon would be closer. Don't quote me on that.

Allan, $1.00 / gal sounds about right for a used tank or More if you can get it. If there is any LP left in the tank then add accordinglyfor that gallonage

John A.

Do you mean the 5 & 10 gallon tanks? I talked with a supplier who said the big tanks don't get tested; some have been in use since the 20s.
