Several older chainsaw questions (Homelite, Allis, Stihl)

I recently bought three older chainsaws at a yard sale (at $5 each!). There's a 24" Homelite XL924, a 20" Stihl 032av, and a 16" Allis-Chalmers 195. I'd say the Stihl is about ten years old and the other two are around 20. The Homelite lights right up on old gas, the Stihl runs but is missing parts, and the Allis' carb is messed up. I will be hitting all the local pro tool shops in a few days, but until then, a few questions:

1. Anybody know the gas mixture for these? The Allis is a 16:1, so I'm not sure about listening to Homelite and using 50:1 in the old XL924.

2. How's the general quality of the saws? I know about Stihl--how about the others? This Homelite (metal oil lines with expansion fittings!) doesn't look like the JD crap department stuff you find these days and the Allis is a very sturdy little saw.

3. Who made the Allis? I kind of doubt that they made their own chainsaws. I looks Poulan-ish, but I can't be sure.

4. Any tips, specs, tricks, history, stories to go with these models? That kind of info is always helpful to me.

5. One of the Stihl's bar mounting studs has pulled out of the aluminum saw casing. Would an insert be the way to go, or could I get a stud with one oversize end? There's no way I'm paying to replace half of the crankcase.

6. How's parts availability with the older saws? That's a biggie for me. The Stihl is not going to be cheap to repair.

That's about it. I'm really not as ignorant as I sound--just trying to cover all bases. I've worked on more mowers, blowers, trimmers, chainsaws, and mopeds that I care to remember.

Thanks in advance.

I OWN A STIHL MODEL 032AV THAT I DROPPED OUT OF A TREE AND NEEDED TO GET A NEW HANDLE AND SPROCKET COVER. I FOUND OUT FROM STIHL THAT PARTS ARE OBSOLETE FOR THIS MODEL. YOU CAN'T GET THEM ANYMORE. I WOULD BE INTERESTED IN BUYING THE SAW OFF OF YOU FOR PARTS. PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF YOU WOULD BE INTERESTED. THANK YOU

Does anyone know how to find a chain for an 18 inch homelite that came with a 64 link chain?

I am able to find 62 and 72 ... but not 64.

your local chainsaw shop should sell bulk chain and be able to put a 64 link chain together for you.

If the Saw is a XL, XL2, Super 2 or VI Super 2 a 14 " bar takes a Oregon #91SG (saftey guard) chain 53 drive links long. I sell that chain for 14.88. I also have a non-safety HOMELITE chain for $13.88

My Questions are straight up simple ones.

I was given a Homelite Chainsaw Super XL Automatic. Ut. No. 10045A Ser. No. 503500292 I don't have the owner's manual for it.

I want to know the fuel + oil mix ratio is ?

I would like to know how full the oil reserve for the chain should be and what kind of oil to use.

Thanks, Ralph F. Knight

I deal with the older Homelite saws and I have found them to be the best of any I have owned.
I just recently bought a Homelite XL-904, it has a 24'' bar and will out cut anything around.
The older Homelite saws use a 16:1 mixture which is 1/2 pint 2-cycle oil to one gal. of gas.
I had a brand new Husqvarna 372 XP, it was a little over a $800 and my old Homelite would cut circles around it.
They are farly easy to find carb. parts for but good luck on everything else, Homelite was bought out about five years ago by John Deer.
Let me know what you find out.

I'm a small engine mechanic and I just wanted to let you know that if the coil was bad on your saw that it wouldn't run at all.
It sounds to me that the carb. is clogged up and needs to be soaked in laquor thinner for a few days and find a new diaphram.
E-mail me and let me know if you have any luck.

need the little sponge type filter behind the bar for the auto chain-oiler. it obviously keeps the oiler from giving you a bath. CanI make one myself?... And... where can I get manuals?

Thanks, guys. Your advice is pretty much right-on, so it's been a big help. The Homelite is all fixed up, I'm getting an insert for the Stihl and a carb kit for the Allis-Chalmers.

Thanks again.

The Stihl runs on 50:1 but some parts for the 031 and 032 are not available anymore. That 032 is a little more than 10 years old. Its closer to 20.

If the hole is not to slopped out, just the threads stripped, then your Stihl dealer will have a metric Heli-coil kit to reinstall the bar stud.

Keep and fix the Stihl, I used an 084 on a Alaska sawmill and loved it. For smaller work I used and still have my dads old Homelite that is still the saw I use today it must be 30 years old. Forget the other. The Homelite to this day says on the cap 1 pint oil to the gallon.
Good luck

I don't know about the allis and the Stihl, but I have made a lot of sawdust with thos old Homelites. I always used 16:1 gas mix, and burned up three engines before I learned to always use High-test when running with unleaded gas. The lower grades make alot of carbon buildup in the head, raise the compression, start knocking and score the cylinder.

One thing you should be aware of: one reason these saws are so cheap is no chain brakes. If one of them jumps up and bites your face off you may wish you'd spent a little more money.

Wow! $5.00 each thats a great deal!!! Ok here go's

2. Id say the quality is pretty good for their age. Probably all metal case right? and I'll bet pretty heavy too!

3.checked my catalog and the AC uses the same exact bar and part# as many older Poulans so it is probably a Poulan

5. maybe try an insert first if that doesnt work go with a bigger stud

6. the Stihl will be good for parts availibilty but expensive. the other 2 will probably be a little bit harder. Ebay is a good place to look also go to www.mfgsupply.com they have alot of parts for older saws. Thats where I got my catalog.

Here is a big list of sources:

Hope this helps you out.

Hi John, I have a Mac Pro 610 20" thats 20yrs old that I've been using 25 to 1 mix since new and it still runs just like new, stored with old gas every year, I'm on my 4th bar, I have no idea how many chains I've worn out but it's a bunch and it still starts with 3 pulls as it did when new!!! Although it can run at 40/1 mix, I like the extra oil protection. I've been burning 3 to 5 cords a year for the past 20yrs. I sure got my money out of this one!!!

Great buy on the saws! I'd fix the Stihl and forget the others!
