Q. for T-Bone - magnetic influence on welding

Hey T-Bone (and others), I was using a handy little gadget (a big magnet designed to hold items in place for welding)the other day and found that I had a great deal of difficulty striking an arc as long as the magnet was close by. When I moved the magnet away, I had no problem. Does that mean the magnet is influencing the plasma gases or something like that? Have you had that kind of problem with a magnetic field? Sometimes when I"m stick welding and having trouble with arc blow...I switch from DC to AC and it seems to eliminate it. Your mileage may vary. Fred OH

It's almost funny. They sell those magnets by the thousands for welding positioners and they can make your welding really tough around them. Kind of the same story with those "handy" magnetic ground anchors. Best bet is to put in a couple of good tacks and get the big magnets out of there.
A lot of the basic welding books talk about it and suggest ways to minimize the effects. A professional heli-arc guy I know always puts his ground as close to the work as he can.

Hi glenshoe. The term is called �arc blow�. You can sometimes get around this by moving the ground clamp to another location. Flux core welding is also a big help, as the majority of the flux core wires are DCSP. If you really want to get you fill of dealing with arc blow try splicing a H-pile driven into the ground. After the pile-driving hammer as beat the he!! Out of them then you have to add another section onto it. When you weld towards the heels, where the flange and web intersect it really gets interesting. One trick is to wrap the ground lead around the section that is driven in the ground, 2,4,5,6 times clock wise, if this does not help change directions, go counter clock wise. If this does not work you can try pre-heating the base metal, other wise, you got to fight it. Change direction of the weld, change the rod angle. Arc blow is always a pain!

Yep, ran into it with used oil field drill stem for feed lot fence posts. Some times it would blow like a cutting torch.
