Ok I am new to this process. I do weld quite well with a stick welder. I have started restoring old cars as well as my old tractors and need to weld on the fenders or lets say thin metal. Question is should I use Argon/CO2 and thin wire or the flux core. My welder came with .035 flux core. I see that you can get it in .030 flux core. Will this work for fender type welding. Or do I need to go to the smaller .023 and argon/co2

Hi Steve,

Using flux cored Mig on lite gauge SM is like using stick electrodes. Both will get the job done but oxy/act, solid wire Mig with 75He/25Ar, or Tig will be a better process choice.

Use alot of tacks as lite gauge SM likes to move and warp. The closer your tack welds are the last amount of warpage will result.

Joint prep is critical for warpage control. The wider the gap, the more filler rod that has to be applied to the joint thus creating a stronger contraction creating warpage as the metal cools.

Weld is position is critical. 45� vertical down is a great position as it lets you weld faster with sligtly less penetration and a slightly narrow bead width.

With 75He/25Ar cover gas the He content will let the bead lay flater for less work during the shaping phase. For a home shop use 100% Ar works well and with correct joint prep and welder technique can be used as well as the 75He/25Ar mix. Pure Ar will cost 30% less than a Ar/mixed gas.

I agree that Mig with .023 wire is a good size for lite gauge work. .030 also works well to about 22ga.

.035 flux core is bad news for any kind of sheet metal work. I've tried and the thinnest I suggest to even try with it is 14ga. 16ga is tough and 20ga is just short of impossible. If you try and do sheet metal with flux core, you will become really good friends with a grinder.

Go with the argon/co2 mix. I use .023 wire and am very happy with the results. I tried flux core and it splatters all over the place. The good thing about MIG is that anyone with the least bit of tallent can weld with it.

Hi Steve. Don�t get me wrong; I�m no body and fender kind of a guy. I have a brother-n- law who has been doing it for 40 + years. One of the best oxygen acetylene welders I�ve ever seen. Myself I was a structural welder for years, but I remember there was a time when I would panic if I were assigned to weld anything thinner than 3/8�. I have worked with plates as thick as 8-inches. Now there is a time and place for everything. 8-inch think plates, got dual-shield or submerged arc written all over it. 10-Ga and thinner has MIG written all over it. Majority of my career I welded with Intershield, used literally tons of it, works great for outside welding. I have welded with it in 90 MPH winds in Alaska with no problems. In my personal opinion Intershield or flux core, sucks compared to MIG. Go with the MIG, .023 with 75 / 25.

HI Steve

I like the gas mix of 75/25 Argon/CO2 for this type of work, it give you a wetter,wider puddle [fluxing action] with slightly less penatratiion.

The thinner/smaller dia. wire takes less amps. that will produce less heat for disstorion [sp?] Tho you may need to go to a different liner and drive rolls, tip to run it. When possiable [sp? again] on the inside a chill bar of copper or alum. [as a second choice] could be used to help with this and burn-thru.

Myself I prefer soild wire over the flux core-until I get to .045 & I mostly will run this duel-shield [with gas].

I'm real dissapointed.

Stick welded as a self taught hobby for past 25 years and do a pretty good job as a farmer.

Decided I needed to upgrade to MIG. Bought the .035 flux cored machine. That's the nastiest, sloppiest, horrible looking mess I ever saw in my life..... .but it holds good and welds tin.

Yeah I know I could have bought the gas rig, but I thought I'd lowball it and being lazy and out in the boonies (used to be) long way to get gas.
