I have a Devilbiss 4 cylinder air compressor with a 19" pulley on it. The low pressure cylinders are 3.25" X 3.50", high pressure cylinders are 1.75" X 3.5". How fast would this compressor need to turn to run a Sand blaster that needs 15CFM @ 100 psi? Would a 10HP B&S engine have enough power to run it? Any help would be apprciated.

it should be stated by somone that the faster the compressor runs the shorter the life span of the compressor especially after the manufactures specs. also make sure the compressor doesnt get too hot as man who run san blasters run too small of a compressor for 1 hour or so and burn them up quick.

With a very rough estimate, I come up with about 450 rpm to displace 15 cfm. That means probably 900 rpm to deliver it at 100 psi. Most industrial duty compressors should turn at under 1000 rpm The rule of thumb for gas / electric is 2 to 1. I know that 5 HP electric compressors will deliver volume in that range so a 10 HP gas should do it but you sure wouldn't have a lot left over.
Remember, all this is just educated guesses but it looks decidely possible so I would think it worth the effort to try it.

Sounds reasonable, So if I run the engine at 3600 RPM(manufacturers recommended speed for 10HP), I should need a 4.75" pulley on the motor end. Thanks for your input. The reason I'm using these units is because I got them both for nothing, picked them up at our local solid waste transfer site(county dump). Drill in Alberta

Most industrial pumps recommend 850 RPMs. To calculate shieve size use to following formula
Sheive(motor pulley) = 850 x 19 / motor RPM
19 is your pump shieve size
X= Motor shieve size
X= 850(19)/ 3600
X= 16150/ 3600
X= 4.486 looks like you need a 4 1/2 inch pulley

Sounds like you have an old 432, which will last you a lifetime. 15 CFM requires about 3-5 electric motor horsepower, so given the 2-1 rule (gas HP vs electric HP, which is a bit on the safe side), you should easily be able to run this compressor at 15cfm, and maybe a little more. 432's were run mostly as 5 to 7.5 horsepower (18~30 cfm) compressors, though I have heard of them running as a full 10 hp. Calculating horsepower output from the cylinder sizes gives me around 5.9 horsepower for electric motor horsepower. You should be ok with a 10 hp gas. A 4.75 motor pulley will give you 900 rpm, which sounds right. Depending on where you are in Alberta, you can give Berkley Compressors in Red Deer a call if you need parts. I worked on compressors in Alberta for about 8 years.

Thanks for the tip Roger, I do need head gaskets for it, the high pressure side is blown out on both cylinders. Probably why it was trashed, it was blowing high pressur air into the crankcase. I have a 4.25" pulley which I will use on the engine. What size of a air tank would be used on that size of a compressor?

80 gallons is a good size for that compressor, as long as it gives you enough room to mount the engine.
