Powertrain Brand Engines

Been seeing these pop up in discount catalogs,surplus flyers etc.Retail models bright yellow with black tank,carb,air cleaner.Other than that resemble Hondas somewhat.Look to be primarily horiz. shaft models,5.5-13hp.Anyone know the poop on these goobers?Prices seem to be Briggs/Tec comparable.

I'm not familiar with this brand name. But I'm sure Honda didn't private label these.

Rather, I'll bet these engines are Chinese clones. There are many dozens of companies in China that buy a few samples of a particular model industrial engine, tear them down, lay the parts out and reverse-engineer them. If they buy enough sample engines and/or get lucky enough covering the tolerances for the component parts they might tool up a decent engine. On the other hand, I've heard of some of these engines that run terrible, are noisy, vibrate, etc.

Besides suspect quality, an issue in the US with these clones is that they have no service network. Parts availability is dubious at the moment. Then who knows which of these companies will be doing business in the US down the road. (the engine companies are pursuing many options to protect the intellectual property of their designs) And don't assume that you'll be able to figure out/find a Honda part that'll fit a clone engine.

Buyer beware.

I've seen them too and your right they look exactly like a Honda except for the color. Everything from the shape of the flywheel cover to the shape of the electric panel where the keyswitch goes is identical. If you look though the one thing that sets them apart from the Hondas is that they aren't "California Emissions Legal". Based on that what I've seen and read I'm figuring that Honda is making these engines for somebody else. Just like most major manufacurers have been making the "generic" or "store" brand stuff for years the item has the same characteristics as the "name brand" but at a lesser price. To me that's just good sense on Honda's part since it lets them move into the "inexpensive" market and make money there as well as with their high dollar "name brand" engines. It's just more money in their pockets from those that don't care about the name brands that they didn't have a chance with before. I'm gonna be ordering one of the 9Hp ones When I get back to the shop on Friday to drive a pump on a small hydraulic system. I'll post again when I get it in my hands and let ya'll know how it looks.

IIRC, Andy's right. Chinese Honda knockoff. They also make a line of generators are that part-by-part clones. Unknown quality.
