i was in home depot the other day and noticed they had dewalt and black and decker cordless drill batteries that looked to be almost identicle, but its hard to tell for sure thru the package, i was wondering tho are they actualy interchangable, i have a 14.4 volt drill that i need another battery for and the black and decker ones are only about half of what the dewalt batteries are so if they will fit i will probably buy them instead. just wondered if anyone had tried this before

You can rebuild your own batteries. Take the edge off a charge by running the battery down just a bit. Measure the voltage at the terminal. At 1.2 v per cell you can figure out how many dead cells you have. Open the case and with a volt meter check each cell individually. There are no maybe cells, they are either 1.2 v or ZERO volts. Cut out the dead cells and solder in new ones from a donor battery. The tape solders easily.

Mark,
You are correct. B&D owns DeWalt, at one time the cases of the drill were the same. The batteries are the same (size) and will interchange. As far as quality of the cells in the battery, I don't know that. The BDs have plastic gears, DeWalt metal. Ryobi builds the craftsman line for Sears.
I bought the 14.4 B&D to replace my 10 year old 9.6V Makita and it is junk. Great around the house, but I really believe my Makita with half a charge will keep up with the new 14.4v B&D.
Next drill will be a quality brand.
Just my observations.
Rick

The batteries will interchange. I charge black and Decker batteries in my Dewalt charger because it is a better charger without problem.

If you have any battery stores in your area, some of them rebuild your old batteries. They put new cells in your old plastic. I have had this done for half what new is...

Don't know about the batteries, but has been my understanding for a few years now that Dewalt has been owned by Black and Decker, but still marketed under Dewalt as a higher end product than Black and Decker.

One thing that you could do would be to take a volt meter that measures DC and measure across the leads of both batteries. If the polarity is the same as would be mounted in the item (drill, etc), and the mounting is the same, would be no resaon it wouldn't work. Depending on the required polarity, the piece of equipment is looking for either +14.4 or -14.4 VDC, and as long as it gets it in the proper polarity, that's all it cares about. Would only be nicer if mounts the same.

Can't help you on the Dewalt/BD but all these cordless drill batteries are retailed at SUBSTANTIAL markup.I was in need of replacements and spares for my Skil/Bosch tools and found an online Skil/Bosch dealer where I obtained new batteries for just over 1/2 retail. Its well worth shopping around.
